Hank Haney on Nick Faldo: ‘He Does Next to No Research’

Back in the day, no one prepared harder than Nick Faldo.

But now that he’s left the Tour for a spot in the tower, the old work ethic is not as evident.

So suggested Hank Haney, anyway, during the Sunday broadcast of his SiriusXM PGA Tour Radio Show.

His comment came by way of comparison as Haney discussed the TV work of Brandel Chamblee.

“(Chamblee) researches more than anyone. Some people have opinions. Johnny Miller has opinions, no doubt about it.”

And then came this opinion from Haney himself.

“Nick Faldo does next to no research. I mean, he just shows up and talks about how it used to be. Yeah, he’s got opinions based on being a great major champion but Brandel Chamblee has opinions that are all researched and studied and you have to give the guy credit for really putting in the time and effort to do his job. And people think he picks on Tiger but he’ll say lots of good things about Tiger. But he also tells it like it is. I like to hear a guy that tells it like it is.”

You can listen to the full audio on Haney’s remarks here. “Hank Haney Golf Radio,” an instructional-based show, airs Saturday and Sunday mornings at 10 a.m. Eastern Time on SiriusXM PGA TOUR Radio.

I'm not even sure why you compare an in-studio analyst with the guy doing on air commentary.  Different jobs, different approaches.  Personally, I like listening to a guy like Faldo or Miller who know what's going on in a guy's head when he's trying to win.  Feherty's fine for what he does, McCord tells the same jokes at each venue every single year; it's fine the first time you hear it but it gets old.

What nobody can answer is how does Notah Begay still have a job?  Play by play guy:  Hey Notah, it looks pretty cold out there.  Notah:  Yes, it is pretty cold out here.  Play by play:  Hey Notah, that lie looks a little dicey.  Notah:  Yes, that lie is a little dicey.  Slow witted and inarticulate are not the hallmarks of a good on-course guy.  I have to assume that the powers that be thought the hire would get them greater Tiger access, but it's not worth it.

Faldo likes to compare what he did 20 years ago to what a player does today when he messes up a shot. Faldo always says the player SHOULD have done what Faldo did. who cares what kind of shotFaldo played 20 years ago.

I must have missed the memo that tells me I should care what Hank Haney thinks about anything.  If you keep giving this clown a forum, he is going to continue to think he is still relevant.  Please stop enabling him so he finally just goes away!

Chamblee is a golf channel anchor / analyst.  Faldo is an on course color commentator..Comparing apples and oranges  Chamblee's position requires research and data.  Whereas Faldo's is more about on course insight and information.  Not a whole lot of research and studying required.

My best analyser is Jonnny Miller when I heard Sir Faldo said Jim Nantz SIr ( critisized all the time  Tiger Woods) what kind of sir.

Faldo knows better than Brandel on what is going on in the players' heads on any given moment on the course. He was in their shoes. No much for Brandel.

Statistics and technicality have some merits, but when you relied heavily on it, like BC does, you ended up make a fool of yourselves. Even I can analyze swings with superslow motion video if I know upfront where the ball ended up already.

I like Faldo.

How does he know? What research? Haney's opinion is just that. If Faldo isn't doing a good job he'll be replaced but I hope it's not because Haney is finger pointing.

Peter Kostis would have got my vote if he was included on the above list.

I like Faldo. I knew he was going to be good when he made a Pink Floyd reference (comfortably numb), and a Monty Python reference (silly walk) in the same broadcast.

Haney is trying to remain relevant.  I am not a big fan of Faldo but the guy probably has more golf knowledge in his little finger than just about anybody and he has some cred for having produced on the course.  Chamblee's only negative is that he violated the eleventh commandment and uttered a discouraging word about Tiger.  Among the Tiger worshipers, this is a blasphemy that can never be forgiven.

Faldo's OK. McCord is classic. Feherty can be funny but should stay out of political stuff. Miller needs to be sent far, far away - he doesn't tell it like it is, he tells us his opinion. Maltby is good, Dottie Pepper was good, Nantz is good.

Have to go with David Feherty, knowledgeable and a showman!

And Hank, we can therefore assume your opinion is based on research?

Also, Faldo doesn't have to do research. He's got a great personality. You should find a coach who can give you one of those.

Hank, no one is listening to you. You were rejected by Tiger, so you wrote a tell all book. You're a pariah now. Stop trying to get back into the limelight by trashing others to look better yourself. Put a fork in you. You're done.

Why would Haney feel Chamblee is out of hand about Tiger after what Haney did to Tiger? I like Faldo telling it like it is. I would always prefer to get my golf information about Majors etc from players like Faldo,Miller,and Andy North players who have won Majors unlike Chamblee.

Haney is such a schmo... What research needs done? First, it is golf. Second, Faldo won six majors and was dominant in the Ryder Cup for a decade.

Haney's claim to fame is making a Tiger Woods AND Charles Barkley worse.....

Haney is an idiot. Faldo knows his stuff, vg broadcaster. Miller is a tiger hater.

"Other" should be a selection choice in the poll above because none on the list make the cut though Andy North and Lanny Wadkins do a terrific job.  Chamblee is tolerable when it's not apparent he's talking to hear the sound of his own voice.  Johnny Miller's time is gone..

No doubt that Hank is  a great teacher, but Faldo was the best player in the world for a long time. He has been there done that. After becoming very successful in hie early pro days, he decided he needed to completely change his swing in order to compete at the very top level.  Did that with Leadbetter. Result - #1 for 97 weeks; 6 majors etc etc.  Knowing how to win and doing it just counts for more as far as I am concerned, especially when talking about the players' thought processes. What I also like about Faldo is that, like Johnny Miller, he tells it like it is. He doesn't sugar coat poor shots from tournament players, like several commentators tend to do.

Big fan of Faldo and Haney. Stirring the pot is good for the game...keep it up, boys.

I like Feherty but he`s an green side analyst, Faldo is the best behind the desk analyst!

Every golf broadcaster at CBS, with the exception of Ian Baker Finch, should go. McCord and Feherty are two clowns. Interested to see who Fox hires when they start broadcasting golf.

I really would like to see Sir Nick Faldo slip away from broad casting, there has to someone better. No I'm not thinking about Hank Haney either.

Feherty is not an analyst...come on. He's an on-air personality...one that I enjoy a lot, but he's not much of an analyst.

@MorphySmith

I do.

Who cares that you don't care?  I'll bet it's a narrower group than the people who care what Faldo says.

I mean, what could Faldo possibly know about the game?  He was only the best player in the world and a multiple-major-championship-winner.

@trucker_mike

Right.  You want people to read what _you_ write, but Haney, who was sought out by the best player of this generation and has taught other professionals as well, is an irrelevant clown.

You're the clown, clown.

@Rbgntx1

Agree with almost everything you say, but why does Haney's interview amount to him "trying to remain relevant"?  If by "trying to remain relevant," you mean "remaining alive while radio interviewers seek him out for interviews, and also while people still pay big money to get lessons from him, and also while professionals still go to him," then yeah, I guess so.

@trucker_mike @MorphySmith  YOU are the MORON if you think someone can't post to make a point about something they find being done that is presumptuous, and a display of Faldo's uninformed arrogance!
