There may be a Cinderella story at the 2014 AT&T Pebble Beach National Pro-Am, but it won’t involve fan favorite, Bill Murray.

The comedian/actor/respectable golfer will be absent from this year’s festivities due to a scheduling conflict, event organizers said: he’s busy promoting his latest film, The Monuments Men, which is scheduled for national release this Friday.

Since 1992, his Pro-Am debut, Murray has made himself into an AT&T icon, appearing on-and-off (but mostly on) for more than two decades, most often alongside Tour veteran Scott Simpson.

Along the way, he has tossed fans into bunkers, threatened to taunt Dan Quayle by yelling P-O-T-A-T-O during his backswing, and earned a rebuke from former PGA Tour commissioner Dean Beman, who, in 1994, summoned his inner-Scrooge and called Murray’s antics “inappropriate and detrimental.”

Murray’s retort: “He’s trying to ban us from the tournament because it’s too much fun.”

For all the goofing off, Murray has also been party to some serious golf, as in 2011, when he and D.A. Points claimed the pro-am competition. It was Murray’s first win in the event. Oh, yeah: Points won the pro division, too.

He should just promote the movie at the tourney. Nobody cares anyway. That event is a total snoozefest because of all the amateurs, but at least Bill Murray adds a touch (small) of interest to the thing.

since 1992?? that is too many years for him to miss for what will be a lousy movie.  Jack Lemon wouldn't have done that.  He should lose his restaurant at the wghof.

won't be the same without him...of course, there is always gary mule deer. I see they list him as a "comedian". Not sure that mr. mule deer has seen a stage in thirty years or ever as a "comedian"....oh, and don't forget, "everybody hates me, nobody loves me, think I'll eat some worms" ray romano. what a drag on the day he is.  seems George lopez has dropped of the golfing map.............good. Ain't much "celebrity" in this any longer, hasn't been for a while. Primarily they consist of second rate actors from second rate productions or has beens...not that that is all bad I guess, but, I'm sure they could upgrade the field enormously if they simply dropped the celebrity idea...a number of players have passed this one up because of all the stupidity of it.

Just as long as they're not replacing him with George Lopez. www.fantasygolfreport.com

@JSElliott  Yeah, it's not like George Lopez is a quality guy who stepped in to help save the "Bob Hope" tournament. F you.
