Hey, if it worked for Phil . . .

Taking a page from Phil Mickelson’s 2013 playbook, Rory McIlroy has confirmed that he will play in the 2014 Scottish Open, the week prior to the British Open at Hoylake.

McIlroy, the sixth-ranked player in the world, last played in the Scottish Open in 2008 and 2009 at Loch Lomond. His decision to return to the event was inspired partly, he said, by Mickelson’s back-to-back wins in the Scottish and British Opens last year.

“To play competitive golf on a links course will be great preparation for The Open the next week,” McIlroy said.

The former top-ranked player in the world, McIlroy has been working himself back into form following a woeful 2013 campaign. He closed last calendar year with a win at the Australian Open and kicked off 2014 with a tie for second in the Abu Dhabi Golf Championship. At the Dubai Desert Classic in late January, McIlroy opened with a sizzling 63 before slipping into a tie for ninth.

McIlroy has never played at Royal Aberdeen, site of the 2014 Scottish Open, but, in a quote that might have been generated by a computer program he said:

“I believe it’s a great links with lots of golfing history. I’m really looking forward to the challenge it will present.”

Reclaiming a moderately human voice, McIlroy added: “Phil winning the double last year made me realize that the Scottish Open is a more than good preparation for the Open—he showed it was possible to win both weeks.”

Mickelson will also be in the Scottish Open field when the tournament begins on July 10.

I'd prefer that the Scottish Open be played at Castle Stuart.

Golf Editor, golf.com,  I switched from the Golf Channel site because of all the rubbish and non-important briefs on Tiger Woods.  Now, I see you have an articles in the same vein, "Tiger Woods' Strange Furniture Habit, Tiger's Lively Ladies, and Tiger Woods Reportedly Asks-Ex_Wife, Elin Nordegre, to Remarry Him."  Distasteful!
