Tiger Woods’ Status for Doral ‘Up in the Air,’ Could Lose No. 1 Ranking to Adam Scott

Tiger Woods is receiving treatment for his back after withdrawing from the Honda Classic on Sunday with back spasms, but his status for the WCG Cadillac Championship at Doral is “up in the air,” according to a text message from Woods’ agent Mark Steinberg to ESPN.

Woods is the defending champion at Doral, which has been good to him over the years. He’s won the event four times, but has not played the course since the Donald Trump-directed redesign last year. If Adam Scott wins this week and Woods finishes outside the top seven, Scott would take over the No. 1 spot from Woods.

After withdrawing from the Honda after 13 holes on Sunday, Woods said in a statement that he was having spasms in his lower back that started during his morning warm-up.

“It’s the same feeling I had as Barclays,” he said, a reference to the 2013 event in which he was in obvious pain during his swing and finished T2. After the Barclays, Woods did not notch a top-10 finish for the rest of the year.

Woods, who has yet to finish a 72-hole event on the PGA Tour this year, is scheduled to address the media on Wednesday at Doral.

Quite frankly, I think the world rankings for golfers should be more fluid and reflect what is happening in the present rather than what has happened within the last several months or so. With that logic in place Woods would not be number 1 and, let's be honest, someone like Jimmy Walker would be much closer to, if not, at number 1. I'm not saying he is number one, but he certainly is the hottest golfer right now and should have a higher ranking. Heck, look at what the rankings are for college football or basketball. It could change almost weekly, and sometimes it does. With all the respect due him as a golfer, Tiger isn't playing like the number 1 player in the world and he should be replaced by someone more worthy. Just a thought.

He is toast. And he'll never break Nicklaus' record in the majors.

Hey, nothing is forever.  Many of a Tiger Woods have come and gone.

Adam Scott will also come and go.  However, each of them will have

their achievements/records made.  They will never lose that.

Era is over. TW an old 39. Not as durable as was Nicklaus. Great 18 years, who knows how much better they could have been with a healthier body, and, less swing adjustments. This last five years with a cut swing have been his most difficult to play consistently.

I have seen him win hurt, confused, hitting it bad, and without a driver. He doesn't have a driver he can count on but everything else is in tact. At Honda on Thursday the way he played others would shoot seventy six. He shoot seventy one. Also he post the miod sixties Saturday. There are a hundred Golfers that would want his wounded game.

He may never win again, if he keeps doing this. He is getting old now, not the same golfer. Not sure he has game anymore.

If he goes for it at Doral, he risks tweeking his back which ends his bid for the Masters....

@Redsoxfan99

The press, at least twice during his career, stated that Jack Nicklaus was over the hill.

Lee Trevino so aptly stated "don't disturb a sleeping bear."

Perhaps Tiger will never win again, nevertheless, he remains relevant currently because he is "The Needle" in golf, ranked number one in the world, and is merely 38 years old.  Some said Tiger would never win again following previous injuries and transgressions debacle.  Golly, Tiger won five times last year and was voted Player of the Year by peers.

@estimatorone  Not necessarily true.  Remember the cyclist that dominated the Tour de France, Lance Armstrong.  He was an American hero and thought to be a man of integrity.  But he was found out to have dominated his races with the aid of PED's.  His titles were stripped from him.

Tiger has much more "coincidences" relating to PED usage than Lance did. And Tiger has demonstrated he has the lack of integrity to cheat in other ways.  What, other than his honor (which is lacking) would have prevented from cheating with PED's before testing began 6 years ago.  So you cannot say he will never lose his records.

@MarkWagner  Mark, like they say, it isn't over till the fat lady sings, and she isn't singing yet. He's getting up there in years for some of the young guns coming up, but he still has some left, just got to nurture some of those aches and pains that will be coming along, in time, for the young guns as well. He's had a great career, broke many records, done a lot for the golf world, but is till just a human being. And no, it isn't steriods, this isn't football or baseball, where your guaranteed a certain salary if you perform well.
