He’s Back! Tiger to Defend Title and No. 1 Ranking at Doral

News, Tiger

Tiger Woods at the Honda Classic (Carlos M. Saavedra/SI).

He’s playing.

Last seen walking off the course with a bad back at PGA National during the final round of the Honda Classic, Tiger Woods will return Thursday to defend his WGC Cadillac Championship at Doral and his No. 1 ranking.

“My treatments have been fantastic,” Woods said. “I’ll be able to hit full shots and go all-out.”

Woods has not made full swings since he left the Honda Classic after 13 holes Sunday, but he has been practicing — his farthest shot this week was about 60 yards, he said. Woods and caddie Joe LaCava went out to tour the course on Wednesday afternoon. He said he would practice chipping and putting on Wednesday, but not full swings until Thursday.
Doral’s Blue Monster is a favorite of Woods, who has won four times here, but he has not played the course since the extensive Donald Trump-led redesign last year.

“I’ve got no idea about what that course holds,” Woods said.

Woods will tee off Thursday afternoon at 12:39 p.m. with Adam Scott and Henrik Stenson. In addition to defending his 2013 Cadillac Championship title, Woods will have extra motivation this week as Scott is slowly creeping up on Woods’ No. 1 ranking. If Scott wins this week and Woods finishes outside the top seven, Scott would take over the No. 1 spot. In his media conference Wednesday, Woods talked about how much the No. 1 ranking meant to him, especially since he regained the ranking with eight wins since 2012 after falling outside the Top 50.

“It feels good because you have to earn it,” Woods said of the No. 1 ranking and then took aim at some of his media critics. “A lot of you here had written me off … and here I am.”

After Doral, Woods is expected to play at Arnold Palmer-hosted Bay Hill — where he won last year — and then not play again until the Masters. He said that practice was more important to his Masters preparation than competitive rounds.

“It’s more important to keep my feels and that’s what comes from practice,” he said, adding that he plans to be at his best for the year’s first major. “I want to be strong and fit and healthy in order to play that course and give it my best.”

The nagging injuries that he’ll have to deal with during that preparation is just part of aging, he said, listing an inventory of aches and pains he’s suffered over his career to his elbow, back, knees and Achilles. The first time he tweaked his back was in college, he said.

“That’s the nature of a repetitive sport, you have repetitive injuries and most of my injuries are that,” Woods said. “As I get older I don’t quite heal as fast as I used to. I don’t bounce back like I used to.”

Following Woods’ withdrawal from the Honda Classic, Paul Azinger and Woods’ former coach Hank Haney suggested that Woods’ injuries might be the result of too much weight-lifting. Woods disagreed with that assessment on Wednesday.

“Most of the stuff we do is preventive stuff,” he said of his workout routine. “I am actually much smaller than I used to be.”

When a reporter suggested Woods try yoga, he responded that he’s tried it.

“It does help, no doubt,” he said “I’m just not too good with the patience part of it.”

So...he loses his number one rating. What? If he then drops down somewhere in the top 10 or maybe even lower...he is suddenly a bad player? There are other golfers to enjoy watching other than whoever is number one. That said....we still have more than just a couple years to still see what Tiger can do...or what the limits of his accomplishments will be.

I guess I am as bad as all of the others commenting. I usually criticize people who seem to care about him. Why should we care about Tiger? It's like watching a train wreck or a NASCAR crash. You just can't take your eyes off of it.

He's a very talented golfer with a damaged Karma is the reason we follow him.

Whats going to happen next to him is the answer.

As he gets older he doesn't heal as fast?  He quit winning majors when he was 32.  Is that old?  The timeline for healing slower seemed to coincide more with the implementation of PED testing than it did with old age.

Tiger is lucky there is no cut this week. I'd be surprised if he's anywhere other than DFL on Sunday. I suppose finishing an event on a Sunday would be a step in the right direction. http://wp.me/p32cTD-lx

Sitting behind your computer being all disrespectful, rude and obnoxious - making unfounded and unproven comments about others makes you look bad because it speaks volumes about you as a person and sadly not in a good way.

Why don't you let today be the start of a new beginning.  Be nice to yourself that way you can be nice to others. Just a thought...

Tiger's biggest problem may be Lindsey Vonn dry-humping some other dude.

Tiger should be shipping for rocking chairs.  Time to hang up the spikes and play checkers on the veranda.

Wonder if Tiger is receiving a "fee to appear" at Doral GC this weekend?  Fees can be paid in multiple packages.

I maintain that Tiger W.D.'d because of injury.  Why would he quit after 13 holes to miss a check, be ineligible for the Vardon Trophy, and open himself to critics?  divotman has it right in my humble estimation.

Good luck to Tiger, Phil and Adam this week at Doral GC!  Should be fun watching the interactions or lack thereof between Tiger and Stevie Williams.

The big picture clearly reveals that Tiger, without another major or tour win, is the second greatest player in the history of golf.  This follower of golf has had the privilege of watching the greatest player in golf, Jack Nicklaus, and the second greatest during their respective career's.  It is always interesting to watch Tiger even if he only shows glimpses of his fine shots, just as it was most rewarding to watch a 46 year old Jack Nicklaus win his 18th major and last green coat at Augusta National GC in 1986.

So his I-am-getting-my-butt-kicked, back-spasms are healed!

Good! Let's kick his butt again!

Maybe just maybe his back really was bothering him even just a little and he withdrew...so what? It's not like it's a team sport and he was letting the team down. And it's not like he didn't play nearly 4 complete rounds of golf and screwed over fans who paid to see him. Instead of further irritating the injury he left the competition knowing he was already out of contention so he could start healing for the upcoming rounds at Doral. Sounds like a smart move to me.

Oh, it's a Tiger article. what a good opportunity for me to catch up on all the animosity, hatred, and bile that has been missing from my life since the last discussion about one.

This should be a surprise to nobody. Tiger is a drama queen. His WD at the Honda had to do with his "back"....only in that he was so far "back" from the leaders on the scoreboard. Drama....Queen. Cannot wait to see him on the upcoming TV show- "Real Housewives of Jupiter Island".

BTW...as much of a Drama Queen as he is,and lest I be accused of not appreciating his golfing talent, I still think he just may win at Doral....

Quits when he's not going to win (which is a lot).

Needs to get back on the PEDs to be competitive again.

fraser

the big cheat acts this way everytime he is not playing well....limps suddenly appear when not present earlier in the round....grimaces and reaching for the back.....bending over in a pained way....walking with an antalgic gait....he is a supreme actor....to gain sympathy and provide excuses.....the sad part is it works....apologists arise and the media plays their part in the farce.....and over and over.....please stop enabling this behavior

@girardjoe

girardjoe,

Excellent question, what's going to happen with Tiger in the future?

CjMael
CjMael

@buckeyevegas  Are you serious? You doubt that golf can cause back injury or pain? This is obviously not only the comment of someone who does not or has not played Golf...but it is also the comment of someone who is or never has been an athlete. Virtually any golfer who quits playing, pro or otherwise...quits because of their back. Once an athlete gets playing golf in their blood...there is actually hardly ''nothing'' that can break them of it...other than an injury....and those injuries are usually related to the back.

I know... If he isn't in the media spot light, he cries like a baby and quits.

@The Computer Store Owner

"Show Me The Money," that is, where is your proof for the innuendo that Tiger used ped's during his career?

Tiger's treatments this week for back spasms enabled him to play at least one shot at Doral GC later today.  Tiger may not be healed, however, he is sufficiently fit to play.

@ShutFaceGolf

ShutFaceGolf,

Tiger lucky?  Yes, there is some luck in the game of golf, both positive and negative.  It is sometimes called "rub of the green," good or bad bounce, good or bad lie, and etc.

Tiger, however, in addition to good luck, relied on fitness, a long ball, precise irons and accurate putter to amass 14 major and 79 tour wins thus far in his career.  Tiger also displayed a great short game along the way.

I doubt that Tiger thinks about "being lucky because of playing an event without a cut."  Tiger has the record for making the cut in consecutive events entered.

@divotman  Very accurately put. I used to play this game but had to quit about 30 years ago...due to the back pain it caused me. But that was from going out and playing 54 holes about 3 day a week. It's the love of this game that kills you in it.

@LadyM  I wonder if Lady M, is one of about 120 mistresses?  Unfortunately Tiger could not honestly say "I love you and nobody else".  I'm sure he said it hundreds of times, but I suggested he could not HONESTLY say it.

Who has quit more often during their respective career's, Tiger or Phil?

What proof do you have that Tiger used PEDs to be competitive?

The Computer Store Owner

@macer @The Computer Store Owner  macer, Read my statement.  I didn't say I had proof of PED use, I said the timeline for his loss of dominance (and winning majors coincides with the start of PED testing.  That doesn't need proof.  You can look that up yourself.  I could list  several other reasons that point to Tiger's use of PEDs.  Do you want me to list them?

Tuesdaymom,

How can one be an unhappygolfer?  One plays the game outdoors, under all conditions, sometimes alone carrying a bag and other times with friends, maybe a cigar and few cold beverages, perhaps a little wager and all in good fun (win, lose, or draw).

Happygolfer's challenge to you reminds me of a great song many years ago, "Be Happy!"
