The U.S. Open is coming back to Torrey.

According to a report by the San Diego Union Tribune, the USGA has tabbed Torrey Pines as the host for the 2021 U.S. Open. The San Diego City Council will vote on the proposal this week to make it official.

Torrey held its first major tournament in 2008, the memorable U.S. Open that saw Tiger Woods defeat Rocco Mediate on an injured leg in a one-on-one Monday playoff.

The tournament was a boon for the city. It was the second-most attended U.S. Open in history, set record sales for merchandise and topped the TV ratings charts. The report states the U.S. Open pulled in 59,000 visitors along with $142 million overall for the city.

“It’s a great win for San Diego,” San Diego mayor Kevin Faulconer said. “The fact that we’ve been selected again speaks volumes as to how this city came together and put on a world-class tournament in ’08. It just shows, from the USGA’s standpoint, that we know how to get it done.”

“There are a lot of chess pieces. It’s a process that takes some time,” USGA President Tom O’Toole said. “We wouldn’t have gone back to Torrey Pines any sooner than 10 years, and we’re slightly outside that range now. We had a fabulous Open there; the city was great; and the community was incredibly supportive.”

Future U.S. Open sites include Pinehurst in 2014 followed by Chambers Bay (2015), Oakmont (2016), Erin Hills (2017), Shinnecock (2018), Pebble Beach (2019) and Winged Foot (2020).

Thats fine but Inverness Club should have got 2020 for the 100th Anniversary of our first US Open starring Bobby Jones who shot a pair of 80s in 1920

Look for Mickelson to finally win the U.S. Open at Chambers Bay … CB is a total links course and should suit PM's game perfectly …

"Go somewhere new?"  LIke where, for example?    This comment is naive for a number of reasons.  First is the fact that the "staging area" for the USGA's massive operation require a lot more than just any "nice" golf course can provide.    Merchandising, corporate sponsors, etc., all required ROOM and Torrey has that.   Second, it's a boon for television since it can go in to Prime Time in the east and that makes for Big Ratings.  Third, it's a heck of a golf course.... although you can probably expect another tweak or two before 2021.   And as for "go somewhere new," what do you call Chambers Bay and Erin Hills?  Not only have they NEVER hosted an Open but both courses are what... less than 10 years old!.   Torrey Pines has held exactly ONE U.S. Open Championship.   What.... you think that's practically over-use and it's now old hat?   Please: next time think before you post.
