Garrigus’ Caddie: ‘Ain’t Fair’ To Get Paired With Slow-Playing Kevin Na

Robert Garrigus’ caddie said that playing with slow-playing Kevin Na is a disadvantage after Garrigus and Na played together on Saturday, according to GolfWeek’s Jeff Rude.

“It ain’t fair playing with Kevin Na,” said Robert Garrigus’ caddie, Brent Henley. “It ain’t fair.”

The veteran caddie would go on to say he thought Na’s slow pace got Garrigus out of his rhythm to the point “we felt like we were running.” Before that, Garrigus was running away on the scoreboard, having birdied three of his first five holes and getting to 10 under par for a four-stroke lead.

Garrigus shot 70 on Saturday and lead the Valspar Championship at Florida’s Innisbrook resort after 54 holes at eight under. His Saturday playing partner Na shot 68 and trailed Garrigus by one.

After the round Garrigus actually praised Na, saying the famously deliberative player has been playing faster.

“We were a couple holes behind but we played in 4 hour and 15 minutes or 4-something,” Garrigus said. “It wasn’t that bad. I’ve played a lot slower in twosomes before. Kevin has gotten a lot faster.”

Na defended himself against slow-play critics after the round.

“I don’t know what people were saying but I don’t feel like I should be criticized for my play today because I’m the first one to admit if I play slow but I really didn’t feel like I played slow today,” Na said.

But once you have a reputation for slow play, it’s hard to shake, Na added.

“I might never get over it,” he said. “People watch me this week or the Players and that don’t follow golf regularly. ‘That guy is slow.’ First thing is, ‘That guy is notorious for playing slow.

“Just because you have that mindset and on one hole they’re watching TV and the wind swirls and I back off. ‘There you go. What did I tell you guys? He’s slow.'”

Kevin Na is getting is bum wrap - the delays were caused by other factors and Garrigus’s caddy knows that very well

I always watch Kevin Na in fast forward.  Furyk and Crane as well.

Kevin Na has some golf demons.  Maybe he lacks self confidence.  But with all the negative comments for his slow play I give him credit for dealing with all the complaints with class.  And I appreciated he is in their fighting with the swing he has to the tune of being competitive (sometimes) with the greatest players in the world.  Seems like a nice enough guy.  I wish him well overcoming his quirks and in improving his game.

garrigus makes more excuses than a welfare recipient. every time he misses a putt, he blames the green.......tapping down make believe spike marks.

Garrigus caddie an idiot.  His boss didn't complain. Kevin Na isn't the same slow player he once was.  Even when he was, he never received a penalty for slow play.  Big deal about nothing!.  Good for him to come in second.

Again with the slow play complaints...

Golf takes time. If he plays slower than everyone else, then fine - he plays slower. Forcing these guys to "beat the clock" before their next shot is ludicrous and adds pressure for pressure's sake to a game that doesn't need TV-friendly "improvement". This isn't basketball...it's golf. If you don't enjoy watching golf because you're bored, then don't watch.

And if you're an amateur, and you're out on the golf course hitting into people and generally being a jerk because the group in front of you is "too slow" - shame on you for your poor sportsmanship and lack of class. Maybe a better solution is to sit back, talk with friends, enjoy the day and the beautiful course, and play a relaxing round of golf...or stay off the course until you learn how to do that.

Thank God this article was written...! Suddenly the surgery scheduled for tomorrow for me doesn't seem that important ...!

Patience and respectfulness is what makes golf stand out from any other sport. Keeping your cool. Not easy but its what makes a great golfer. Stay smooth and composed....

I played golf for over 55 years, and the most distracting and un-nerving is playing with or behind a very slow player. Enforce the rules; speed up the game. It is also boring to watch; I change channels!

Well you can tell the non-golfers from the golfers. 1st, clock management is as much the caddies job as it is the golfer. Since it affects his paycheck, he's got a right to complain. 2nd, this is competitive golf, not therapy...If he wants to compete in the special Olympics, fine, but exception should not be made on the PGA. If you think this is harsh, you're not a golfer and you don't know how it effects scores.

Kevin Na is one of my favorite golfers and I know how he feels. He has developed an OCD. it is beyond his control. I have a mild case of OCD and it does slow my play down, but the people I play with understand and do their best to help me. I wish some people would look at a way to help then be part of the problem.

Nobody really cares what this caddie thinks.Maybe he should leave the complaining, if needed to the player.Thats one of the problems now.A caddie should leave that to the boss.

All these pros get to much information. See ball, hit ball was the method for over 100 years until technology came along and ruined the game.

Yes, Na needs more self confidence to play the pace while Bobby G is keeping pace. NOT FAIR to him.

I would not want to see Kevin Na paired with Ben Crane or JB Holmes. Now that would be SLOW However the network would Love the extra ad time LOL

Garrigus should take up tennis then he won't need a caddie to explain why he tanked on Sunday.

He received a 1 stroke penalty for slow play on saturday. Its been an issue with his game. Reminds you of sergio going through his issues. Guys these days rely too much on their caddies and caddies comments should stay in the bag!

It didn't seem to bother Garrigas when he played with Na on Saturday and was leading the tournament at -10 under. You have to play with all kinds of people and personalities, that is part of the game.

Bobby G can't say it, but I'm glad his caddie did.

I hope the USGA pairs Sabbatini and Na together at the US Open if they're both in the field. http://wp.me/p32cTD-mi

Are you guys programmed to blast out on player you don't like no matter what?

Garrigus and Na finished in 3h and 50 min on Sat even though they waited for 10-min for the guy in front of them to re-T and 5 min on Robert's cart path relief.

Na's habit is annoying, but don't criticize him simply because his opponent's caddy make a stupid remark. Na doesn't have to play at Robert's pace. So if Robert is out of his rhythm then that is his problem (Robert never said that Na's pace was the cause).

Tell Garrigus to use that check he just won at the dentist office instead of the crack house.......

I agree with Matt Day, Kevin Na is a notorious slow player and needs to speed up his play. I would do the same and keep going and force him to pick up his pace! Not good enough at the professional level!

Kenneth Lee

Don't think about it. Do something else so that you're not staring at the slow player and waiting for your turn. That takes my mind off a slow player and I stay focussed on my game.

Like the Seahawks' secondary that holds on every play; until the  refs call it they will keep on doing it.

Absolutely! All professionals need to pick up the pace, especially Na!

If the PGA is okay with it, so be it. You'll never get a level playing field. Tiger is also one of the slowest players on tour...yep, and he's never warned.

Wayne Werder

Give a player 50 seconds once his group has gotten level with his ball. I once timed Tiger Woods on a chip shot...1:40 from the time he got to the ball to the time he hit it. The TV coverage actually switched to two other players hitting their shots and back by the time he hit the ball.

Jeff Gilkey
Jeff Gilkey

I would hate to play behind him. His deliberate slow play is annoying. The PGA is promoting speeding up play then Na needs to pick up the pace or gets fined. I played a course where the time limit was four hours. Your round was over where you were at the four hour mark. BTW, we were walking off 18 at the four hour limit.

Hes a caddie and should not be being quoted in the middle of a tournament..its not part of your job..His job is to help his guy and get through any diversity, even slow play..No excuses once you're on the course

Paul Jack Fahrner
Paul Jack Fahrner

Yes. PGA needs to have a long talk with Na and get him to speed up. Spends too much time talking with his Caddie on every shot.

The only thing worse than slow play is playing with someone who can't keep their correct score. Would you consider them a liar? Thoughts please

A big part of why they ended up on the clock Saturday was that Garrigus spent the day in the woods trying to figure out how to get out. Na may be slow, but whether it's slow over the ball or slow because you're trying to escape the trees, it's still slow. Garrigus had a bad time after being put on the clock; that's all on him and has nothing to do with Na. They're timed separately at that point.

Thomas Bima

Knowing that, and wanting to win, if I were Kevin Na, I would play as slow as I possibly could. Just sayin.

Shawn Dean

I agree...playing with a group yesterday and we fell a hole and a half behind the group in front of us and the guys behind us were waiting on every shot. A couple guys in my group were hitting it in the woods and going in an looking for a ball that was never found, then reading putts from all angles when they got on the green...guess who was rushing when it came their turn to play...this guy did, and guess who the marshal came and talked to about being a hole and a half behind...yep me again. This isn't the first time this has happened with them...I have to find new playing partners...ughh!

RobN

No, he did not receive a one stroke penalty on saturday, or any other day.  There hasn't been a one stroke penalty given for slow play since the kid last year at The Masters.

Same here.  I have a golf buddy who is excruciatingly slooooooow.  We played as a threesome at Pebble Beach several years ago (with caddies) and the assistant pro came out twice to speed us up.  Then, on 11 the head pro came out.  Yep, he talked to me.  When I play at my home course I get around in 2:45 as a single.  My buddy said to me after the head pro left, "Hey, we paid our money for this, we can play at any pace we want to."  Arrrrrgh.  We were 4 holes behind!
