Who Belongs on the Mount Rushmore of Golf? Rickie Fowler Names the Faces

Who are the greatest golfers of all time?
That’s a tired question, so here’s a more creative way to ask it.

What four faces would you carve on the Mount Rushmore of the sport? Presented with that monumental query this week in an interview with Bleacher Report’s Will Leivenberg, Rickie Fowler gave a quick-fire reply.

“Well, you’ve gotta throw Tiger in there,” he said. “Then you’ve gotta have Arnie, Jack Nicklaus, and I’m going to round it out with Ben Hogan.”

If only there were five faces on the landmark, Fowler could have added Patrick Reed, if Reed hadn’t already done that himself.

What about Old Tom Morris? Harry Vardon? Walter Hagen? Sam Snead? Tom Watson? Tweet us your Mount Rushmore of Golf @si_golf with the hashtag #golfrushmore.

Tiger belongs in the conversation just not on the mountain, so to speak. Arnie, Jack and Bobby Jones. Then maybe Nancy Lopez or Annika. Perhaps Ben Hogan. No Tiger. Fact: Jack is the greatest professional. Tiger is #2. Fact: Bobby is the greatest Amateur. Tiger is #2. Fact: Arnie is the most beloved golfer ever. Tiger? Somewhere around #450-735. How about a course designer? Or media member? Great player-turned broadcaster such as Peter Aliss or Judy Rankin.

Nobody's changed the game more than Tiger.  You can hate him all you want for the of the course stuff.  Yes Jack has more Majors but just compare all the other stats.  It's Tiger in a landslide.  Tiger gets his own monument.  You can take any other 4 for Rushmore.

Mt Rushmore of Four for each era. Comon apples and oranges here!

I think it should have more than just golfers. I would pick a golfer, a course designer, an equipment designer, and Kate Upton as a cart girl.

I guess he's only thinking of the ones in the limelight.

It's expensive to carve a face in a mountain.  So just in case Tiger is found out to be the Lance Armstrong of golf (and his victories taken away), you better leave him off.

IF he can get 4 or 5 majors after PED testing began, only then could you consider putting him with the other greats.

The real Mt. Rushmore was heavy on those who were the foundation of the country -- Washington, Jefferson and Lincoln.  Teddy R was the only "newcomer" -- and he had been dead 8 years when the work started.

Jones, Hogan, Vardon, Nicklaus.  Jack isn't dead, but he's been inactive long enough.

Bobby Jones, Nicklaus, Hogan, Tiger. Michael Wilcox

Bobby Jones, Ben Hogan, Jack Nicklaus, Arnold Palmer. An amateur with a Grand Slam is way better for golf than Tiger - for bussiness may be different.

Rickie Fowler needs a golf history refresher because the Mt. Rushmore of golf, in my humble opinion, would be Jack Nicklaus, Tiger Woods, Bobby Jones, and Ben Hogan.

Arnold Palmer is likely the most popular player and did much for the game, however, his seven major wins places him behind Sir Walter Hagen with 11, Gary Player with 9, and Tom Watson with 8.  Legacy in golf is measured in major wins.  Palmer is likely to have had one of the best agents in sport, Mark McCormack, to maintain a positive image of Palmer.  Palmer was secondary to Nicklaus and Player after Nicklaus won the U.S. Open at Oakmont CC in, maybe, 1963.

Bobby Jones won 13 amateur and professional majors during his career and created Augusta National GC and the Masters Tournament.  Jones over Palmer at golf's Mt. Rushmore is a no-brainer.

I agree with Rickie.  Tiger, Jack,  Arnie and Ben Hogan!  Sam Snead if there are five!

That's a solid pick, no matter which 4 you pick your going to leave a big name or two out.

screw it... carve 'em smaller & make room for more... 7, maybe 8 I say... Hogan, Jones, Nelson, Nicklaus, Palmer, Player & Snead... that's 7... and I'd say 8 with woods and although I'll admit, athletically and mentally, Tiger's one tough golfer, golf is a gentleman's game, and maybe if he stopped acting with FAR LESS grace than the other 7 listed, maybe he might deserve a spot with 'em! He might be a poster boy for winning, but Tiger is also a poster boy for a lot of the selfish, self-centred, and self-serving actions and attitudes of what's not so right about professional sports and especially professional golf... the other 7 may have their warts, but they're just not as big and ugly as his... maybe some day when he learns to be more of a gentleman, and be more gracious and humble, he may deserve a spot with the other 7!... cheers!

Sorry Arnie - Gary Player has won all FOUR majors (and all FOUR senior majors). But perhaps being South African I am biased :)

@The Computer Store Owner  Why so negative?  I never understood people like you who always try and knock others down.  Is your life that bad when all you can do is pass judgment onto others??  Its a sad and pathetic way to go through life..  You act like Tiger did something to you personally.  Get over yourself!!

@Aaron39 @The Computer Store Owner  because it is very obvious that woods used PEDs.  he was able to burn the candle at both ends and generated more stamina/strength. wood is exactly like manny ramirez of red sox fame and post PED bust.

@Aaron39 @tfaw @The Computer Store Owner  Actually "clues" are exactly what tfaw has.  Same golfer wins 14 majors before PED testing and none since.  A clue.  Golfer with access to the best physicians in the U.S.  flies to Canada to be treated by Tony Galea, the renowned PED dispenser.  A clue.  Skinny golfer builds muscle mass in a manner eerily reminiscent of PED users in other sports.  A clue.  Golfer suffers a number of joint injuries often seen in PED users who have built mass beyond what their bodies can handle. A clue.

Clues.  Circumstantial evidence. But people have been sent to the gas chamber on cases built on circumstantial evidence.

You may disagree with tfaw's conclusions, but he has plenty of "clues" to guide his thinking.  Many admitted PED users never failed drug tests, but the circumstantial evidence was overwhelming.  Not sure why your self-image is so invested in TW being clean ... but I think you might do well to heed your own advice and get a life that is separate from your favorite golfer.
