Frustrated by Back Injury, Tiger Woods Says ‘Too Soon To Tell’ if He’ll Be Ready for Masters

Tiger Woods spoke with the media Monday morning, but he didn’t have an answer to the question on everyone’s mind: Will he be healthy enough to play the Masters?

“For Augusta, it’s still a little too soon to be honest with you,” said Woods, who withdrew from last week’s Arnold Palmer Invitational with back spasms. “It’s kind of the frustrating thing about this. … I’m getting treatment, but as of right now, it’s still too soon.”

After winning five times in 2013, Woods has had a rough start in 2014. In January, he missed the Saturday cut at Torrey Pines, a venue at which he has won seven regular Tour events and a U.S. Open. He finished T41 at the Dubai Desert Challenge in early February and then skipped the Accenture Match Play Challenge.

He returned at the Honda Classic in early March, shooting his best round of the season on Saturday and then withdrawing with a bad back after 13 holes on Sunday. The following week at Doral, where he was defending champion, Woods got into contention with a Saturday 66 and then shot 78 on Sunday and looked visibly pained by his back.

Woods has said that his back spasms are similar to problems he had with his back toward the end of last season. On Monday, he was not asked about a recent report that he is suffering from a bulging disk in his back.

Woods spoke at the Newseum in Washington, D.C., following a press conference announcing Quicken Loans as the new sponsor of the Woods-hosted Washington, D.C., Tour stop, which raises money for the Tiger Woods Foundation. AT&T has hosted the event since 2007 and will sponsor the 2014 tournament at Congressional Country Club in Bethesda, Md., June 26-29. AT&T used to sponsor Woods as well, but dropped his endorsement deal following his scandals in 2009.

Why keep speculating on what will never happen. Tiger Woods will not catch or surpass Jack's majors win total. Tiger is a physical wreck, he has the wrong swing coach and he can't intimidate anyone anymore with his length since many, many players hit the ball now further. Tiger's glory days are behind him, period. He will have to settle for being the second all time greatest golfer.

If the Masters has to fly in the worlds greatest back specialists, and airlift him in like an orca....he'll be there. Any chance he could be a color annalist during the tournament if he's beached?

Even if Tiger is healthy, his chances of putting together 4 decent rounds are tiny.  I suspect he'll win once this year - not a major - and it will be his worst year in a decade.

What a bummer it would be if Tiger cannot play in the Masters.  His search for another major, his chase for Jack's record and playing on a course he knows adds to the hype of the first major.  The Masters will always be the Masters and I look forward to watching every year.

Not having the #1 player in the world there will suck.  But it's still the masters and the phrase that the tournament begins on the back nine on Sunday is so true for this tournament!

TW will play Augusta.  He may not play well.  His ball striking has been mediocre, even in his good rounds where he made every putt he looked at.  He has had only a single round this year with 14+ Greens in Regulation ... what he used to average when he was at his peak.  He only hit 11 when he shot the 65 at Honda ... a round saved by unbelievable putting.  With a bad back and little opportunity to work on his swing, it is difficult to envision him hitting precision shots at Augusta when he has not done so consistently all year.

kelprod1, we may not always agree, however, your comment seven hours ago is most credible, i.e. personal choice and the game is bigger than one player.

tfaw, love your humor!

Tuesdaymom, Transgressions, while certainly distasteful to some, remain a personal  matter.  I separate  individual accomplishments from personal life.  Golf had some superb players who also were known for their transgressions, i.e. Sir Walter Hagen, Freddy Couples, Tom Watson and even The King, Arnold Palmer.  I respect your stance on transgressions.  Be Happy, it is now Tuesday!

OK, are you an orthopedic doctor of medicine?  Please Missouri me (show me) concrete evidence that Tiger does not have bulging disc?

CSO, Dan Jenkins and Tiger are not best buddies.  Jenkins, in a S.I. or Golf Weekly article within the last 18 months, was highly critical of Tiger because the latter will not grant an interview (with Dan).  CSO, would you agree that Tiger has been the player primarily responsible for a four-fold increase in PGA Tour prize money from 1997-2009?  Would you agree that the Tiger Woods Foundation and seven operating learning schools are helping students from many different backgrounds?  You certainly may not respect Tiger for the various reasons you've expressed, however, Tiger has had some positive impacts on golf and society.

This contributor of comments is playing the final holes of life and finding them most enjoyable!  Just the simple things in gulf such as the smell of freshly cut green grass, the sound of a well struck ball, a cigar and brew, and winning or losing a few bets with playing friends.  Heck, in the long run each of us have actions of which to be proud and others that we regret.  Life is too short to be nothing but happy!

I do not care if Tiger plays in the Masters. The tournament is much bigger than any 1 player. Much bigger.

Wow, not much respect for Tiger Woods as evidenced by many of the comments below!

Tiger Woods need not play another professional event and will remain the second greatest player in the history of golf with 14 professional major wins and 79 tour victories.  Tiger remains the needle in golf, the player who generates increased patron attendance, media coverage, and television ratings for nearly every event he enters.  Tiger Woods is history in the making.

One may like or dislike Tiger, however, his record in golf is superlative.

U r right Golf is bigger than Tiger! Would u agree that there will be less TV viewers when he is not playing or on Sunday? Love him or hate him, he is Golf as Michael Jordan is to Basketball.

No Tiger =less viewers on TV and the rating down.

@macer  - I am sorry but Tiger came along when the competition was not that great.

The only consistent golfer out there was Payne Stewart, and he died which helped

Tiger get his 14  titles because Payne would have definately won a few of those.

Palmer, Nicklaus, Player and others in the 60's and 70's had 6 or more Majors while

Jack was getting his 18. No one has more than 3 or 4 since Tiger started winning

his majors.

@macer There's a pretty good question about whether or not Tiger was using PED's for many years.  That brings a lot of his victories into question.

I'd also rank Bobby Jones ahead of Tiger taking the PED question out of the equation.

@KristianColasacco @macer Kristian...have you ever played golf? If so, please tell me  how a PED can help read a putt, decide if you cut, draw or hit a "stinger" under the wind or which iron to hit high, low, soft, hard fade or whatever that calls for a decision and not strength?  Where are you getting your logic? And was Tiger on PEDS when he won three National Amateur Championships? The first Masters? The record breaking 100th US Open?

@Tuesdaymom  I thought we were a country of second chances? Honestly, of all the terrible things someone can do, adultery, while despicable, is pretty inconsequential. If the man has turned his life around, does he not deserve for people to quit harping on the mistakes he made in the past? I am sure you are not perfect, would you like to be reminded of your mistakes at every turn?

@YoungGolfer @jabobjon    Jack was in the hunt many times and didn't finish the deal.  Was it that he wasn't golf smart?  Nope.  Was it that he was a choker?  Nope.  The statistics of other great golfers are more like Jack's percentage.  Tiger usually won if he was in the lead after 54 holes.  Why?  He had fresh PED-healed muscles on Sunday and nobody else did.  Tiger is friends with Alex Rodriguez.  Tiger's doctor was a PED peddler.  Tiger had the side effects of PEDs.  Tiger Woods doesn't even have the integrity of PED cheater, Lance Armstrong.  So why are you so positive that he didn't use.  The people who use PED's are cheaters.  The shoe fits.

Aaron39

@The Computer Store Owner @hcaur @KristianColasacco @macer  Why do you keep posting the same thing every time there is an article about Tiger CSO? Are you mad because Tiger is the best golfer in the world? Are you mad that he has more money than you? What makes you so angry? When you're the best at something, people want to read and know what's going on with you. Kinda like you, who clicks on EVERY Tiger article, reads it and then comments on it. Give it a rest dude...

YoungGolfer
YoungGolfer

@jabobjon @YoungGolfer  Jack N. also used PEDs so did Ben Hogan. they couldn't have been that talented and won so many majors without it. CSO also use PEDs to sell computers. What am i saying... what am i saying is as non sense and meritless as those who said Tiger used PED's.

The Computer Store Owner
The Computer Store Owner

@hcaur @KristianColasacco @macer  First of all Tiger would have a hall of fame career without PED's.  Maybe he would have even been as good as Phil Mickelson.  As to your question how do PED's help?

1). They help you focus and concentrate--valuable for putting

2)  They give you strength--valuable for recovery shots out of heavy rough

3)  They give you endurance over a 4-day tournament by allowing the muscles to heal faster so they are less tired and less sore on Sunday--so if you have a 54-hole lead and are fresher than the non-cheaters on Sunday you will surely win.

But PED's do have some bad side effects as well.  While you are using them you have increased sexual libido.  And when you stop using them you lose your advantage and your body falls apart faster than if you never used in the first place.  And that's why I think Tiger will never win another major.

Got nailed for cheating three times on the course last season.

Only plays for eight-figure appearance money.

Only speaks when Jimmy, Geoff Shackelford, or (on the few occasions he's sober) Dan Jenkins transcribe.

The Computer Store Owner
The Computer Store Owner

@Michael50 @Tuesdaymom  How do you know Tiger has turned his life around?  Does he quit using foul language on daytime TV golf?  Has he started tipping waitresses?  Does he sign autographs even after a horrible round?  Is he cheating on Vonn?  Has he come out with any kind of restitution for the embarrassment he caused golf or the 100+ mistresses he used and threw away?  Nobody knows.  Why are there no stories about how much of a changed man Tiger is?  Surely some of his closest fans would want to spread that information if it were true.
