Graeme McDowell was asked about Tiger Woods in his opening press conference at last week’s Arnold Palmer Invitational and actually gave thoughtful responses.

A subsequent article on PGATour.com quoted McDowell, among several other players, speculating on the state of Tiger’s game.

“He’s lost that sort of force field of invincibility around him,” McDowell said. “The aura is not as strong. He’s still Tiger Woods, still the greatest player ever in my opinion. I don’t remember the first time I played with him but there was a real ‘wow’ factor. He was playing a different sport than me. But guys get older, stuff happens. … (Younger players) are not out there believing he is unbeatable because the positive press that happened for 10 years has been replaced with some negativity. And there are so many great young players now, it’s not just one-offs (of a player here or there). There are 10s and 20s of these guys. There’s a belief level now that you can be 19, 20, 21 and capable of doing it at the biggest level.”

McDowell had to take to Twitter to respond to the criticism he received, so presumably we’ll see less candor and more “no comment” in the future from one of the game’s more affable stars.

McDowell's comments were measured and and on the mark. He has nothing to apologize about.

Golf is killing itself, crucifying guys as likable as McDowell. What a joke. I love this game so much, but if it doesn't modernize it will continue to die the slow death that's begun...

avoid the press, they will come after you eventually.

There is no winning with a press writer. Speak the truth, get butchered. Say nothing, get butchered.

Just trying to get a tiger story out of anything. He didn't say anything wrong. Actually he's spot on. Go Gmac

I don't see what the big deal is. Why should Graeme explain himself?

I have no idea how anyone can take Graeme’s thoughtful, well considered and respectful comments out of context. Unless of course they are bored press looking for a story…but we know this is naturally highly unlikely. Graeme’s analysis is more about the upcoming players and less about Tiger… Everything progresses, it is naive to have believed ANY human can dominate a sport for 15 years or more… Tiger or not. I personally look forward to Graeme’s insights – it is a British/Australian/Canadian/Kiwi/South African trait to call things as you see them. This honesty is clearly just fodder for the sensationalist ( US ) press corps..... Shouldn't you guys be chasing the Kardashians? Leave sensationalistic BS setup questions out of golf. Typical reaction to anyone who states anything other than god like comments about Tiger. He said tiger us one of the best players, ever. He said he's lost something, true. He said the good new players are really good, and not intimidated , again , true. So why are we subject to all this anti - anyone who has an opinion on Tiger. I am sick of watching CBS and listening to them talk about Tiger, when he's not even in the tournament

Not sure the issue..he was respectful and honest..tiger is yesterday's news..

I'd much rather read/hear more about all other players than speculation about Tiger. Tiger Woods story is just way overdone. We've heard enough, haven't we?

Simply stated the truth...if u don't want to hear it don't ask...shouldn't been having to talk about tiger anyway..

He gave Woods far more credit than I would have. But I guess I'm thinking of the whole "man" rather than just Woods the golfer.

Cause Graeme did not understand that the Tiger has Politically Correct Protection?

As a Tiger Woods fan

I ask

What did he say that was so wrong or controversial?

Serge_Storms

I don't see any of his comments as controversial.  Others have said the same things already.  If Tiger can get healthy and start winning majors again, he would earn some of that wow factor back.  But Tiger with a handful of wins in the last 5 years and no majors isn't going to appear invincible to guys on top of their game.

hardly calll any of those comments as CRITICISM, just a player's observations.

The media loves to create controversy.especially where tigger is concerned.

If you can't stand by a comment as innocuous as that one, you'd better just decline to answer any question other than what time is it.  That or grow a set.

There are a bunch of great guys buried under a lot of white crosses who have provided us with the opportunity to speak our minds, not to mention the truth.

Forget the press, forget the sycophants, forget the spinmeisters.

If one wishes to give an opinion, give it.

You will be in good company.

He could have said a lot of more demeaning things about Tiger that would have been more true.  It sounds like he was trying to do the politically correct thing and give Tiger more credit than is due.  But even that got him into trouble.  What's a guy to do?  If I were a pro I would talk about any topic but Tiger.  It's a no-win situation to even address Tiger questions.

Maybe Tom Watson should learn a lesson here.  Just don't say anything about Tiger and why you don't take him.

Reporter: "Tom, why didn't you pick 14-time-major-winning Tiger Woods for the team?"

Watson:  "No comment."

Don't mention that Tiger is 40th in the point standings.  "No comment" is the only way.  You'll still be called a racist but at least they can't disagree with your comments.

@robertgsimms  You're right...nothing. He's just stating what he believes...he didn't degrade Tiger at all, he just stated that he doesn't have the aurora around him, which is somewhat true in my opinion. It's just that the media, once they hear someone say something about Tiger, they blow it way out of proportion. Not bashing Tiger, as he's not involved in that.
