Colin Montgomerie Says Rory McIlroy Won’t Win Masters Until His Putting Improves

Rory McIlroy won’t win the Masters until he improves his putting, according to Colin Montgomerie.

A pre-tournament favorite, McIlroy made the cut right on the number on Friday. Although he finished T8 after shooting 69 on Sunday, he never seriously challenged for the win. And he won’t until his putting gets better, Montgomerie said. The Mirror UK has the full story:

“You would think it was a course that would suit him. He hits it high and he can draw the ball but he’s not putting. Most of his putts are missing to the right and Butch Harmon told me he needs to release the putter more.

“The confidence on the greens is not as it is in other tournaments and if you don’t putt well at Augusta you don’t score and that’s what happened.

“Since that slip on the final day [in 2011] he hasn’t performed and he hasn’t holed the putts that the other competitors have.”

Not that Montgomerie’s comments are likely to get in McIlroy’s head. At age 24, McIlroy already has two major championship to Montgomerie’s zero. And for a hall-of-fame player, Montgomerie had his own share of problems at the Masters. His best finish at Augusta National was T8 in 1998, and he missed six cuts in 15 Masters appearance.

Couldn't agree more. Adam Scott is another one who needs to learn how to putt. The two of them have great swings but their putter let's them down. From what I see of them on the greens they have no understanding of how to swing a putterhead. It is painful to watch them putt.

Monty did not win majors, but that doesn't mean he can't analyze.  Butch Harmon was not a great player, but he is a great teacher and understands the weaknesses of other people's games.  People get all excited, but the skill set required to analyze, announce or teach is different from the skill set needed to play.

Former players who have never won, let me rephrase - have choked their guts out numerous times in Majors has no business commenting on how someone should or shouldn't do in a Major.

Keep quite Ms Doubtfire, your opinion is baseless and not needed.

Who made Monty the "expert" on when Mcilroy will win a masters??. How many masters has the cry baby slob won?? How many majors?? Monty- please get a ticket to Heathrow and leave. We didn't want to hear from you when you were playing (which was average at best, and completely below average in Majors)

Mcilroy was handpicked by Nike to be their next poster boy, his head got fat and his game got soft.  I think he will fade away like their other poster boy.

He is right about not putting great.  He did have many lipouts and edges burned.  He couldn't get a break.  How sad is it that a T8 at the Masters is considered failure for Rory.

Rory's putter did let him down but at least he proved to himself that he can put up a good score with Sunday pin positions. Sure he didn't have the pressure of being in contention but at least he finally played well at Augusta on the weekend.

@D17  Commenters who have never won a professional event  have no business commenting on the thoughts of a Hall Of Fame golfer.

Keep quiet, Couch Jock, your opinion about Monty is baseless and not needed.
