Tiger Woods’ Friend Notah Begay Says Tiger Won’t Play U.S. Open at Pinehurst

If you want to know what’s happening with Tiger Woods, listen to Notah Begay.

Woods and Begay played golf together at Stanford and they remain close friends. So when Begay says Woods won’t be recovered from his March 31 back surgery in time to play the 2014 U.S. Open at Pinehurst in Junes, you can trust his sources.

Here’s Begay talking about Woods on CBS Radio on Monday morning:

“I’ve been in contact with him this week. He missed being at Augusta and certainly was watching the tournament, (but) I think he needs to give (his back) a minimum of 90 days to make sure that scar tissue heals up appropriately and he doesn’t run the risk of re-injuring it. So that would push him past the U.S. Open.”

Begay, who won four times on the PGA Tour, now works as an analyst for the Golf Channel. He said Woods, who turns 39 in December and has had more than his share of aches and pains, is aware that he won’t play golf forever.

“Oh, definitely. He’s well aware of that. It’s certainly not a big secret. It’s not something that he’s trying to ignore. He realizes that he’s approaching 40.”

Woods has not spoken publicly since announcing that he had back surgery to repair a pinched nerve and would be unable to compete in this year’s Masters. In a statement on his website, Woods said he hoped to return to the PGA Tour “sometime this summer.”

He did not attend the Masters Champions Dinner on Tuesday of Masters week for the first time since winning the 1997 Masters. Woods’ agent Mark Steinberg said that Woods’ doctors had advised him to be “very still” following his surgery.

If he does not play the rest of the season, oh well. He needs the time to fully heal and make sure that this does not come back.

Great golfer.... Aroused a lot of interest in the game with people who are primarily interested in his race.... He has been good for the money end of golf but he has be very bad for the game's reputation as a gentleman's sport... Just has John Daly has been bad for golf....

I'll watch golf whether or not Tiger ever plays another tournament.  But if he does win another major, watching the haters fume will be almost as much fun as watching the tournament.  Your comments continue to prove his relevance, despite his lack of performance.  There is no other golfer who maintains that kind of presence when not playing.

It's very hard to dispute how popular he has actually made the game. It is better off that he DID all he has done for the game and will forever be so much more because if him, even after he is retired.

He got his knee better, needs to make sure his back is all good. He will still win a major this year

Golf was just fine before Tiger Woods and it will be just fine when he is gone... The game is bigger than any one player....

NO. Come back and win the Open and the PGA at full strength.

Nope. He needs to give that spot to a good player that can break par. He doesn't have the desire or talent anymore. His luck has run out.

Come back healthy. Then we can see how all these young guys measure up against the old Tiger.

Too bad I think he still intimidates the other golfers!!

No. Needs to heal 100% or will only be out injured again straight after.

Hopefully he has learned his lesson and not try to rush back.

Pretty exciting Masters even w/o him & Phil missing cut. He needs to take as much time needed to come back healthy. Golf will survive...he set the table to insure that...Hogan, Jack, Tiger & who will be next? Jordan S, Patrick R, or ?

It makes perfect sense that Beghay can speak for tigger on this one. Notah's head has been up tiggers rear end for so long, that he has learned how to speak out tiggers belly button

Wow, whatever happened to liking a person for his ability to create? There is a lot of jealousy in this room.

These posts about Tiger Woods remind me of when I was a kid reading all the things I read that people wrote about Hank Aaron when he came near Babe Ruth's HR record. 40 years and people haven't changed a bit. USA!USA!USA!......

I'm tickled to death that lion will be out. Maybe he will soon be gone for good.

Given his 'popularity' amongst other pros, TW was not missed at the Champions dinner. Now, will Begay suffer the same treatment as former coach Butch Harmon, or former caddie Stevie Williams, and be thrown out of TWs inner circle, for speaking out of turn?

Did anybody else read in there where Tiger said he wasn't playing? I never saw it in there. I guess speculation on what a friend say's makes a good headline!

Well the only good story for this year's US Open will be Phil trying to win one.  Or should trying not to lose one. If Phil misses the cut like at the Masters, expect the same crappy ratings.

This will be the final year for NBC covering USGA events.  Last year for Johnny Miller?  It will be interesting to see who will cover the events for FOX.  Maybe they will cherry pick some key golf people for their events.  I am sure FOX will come up with some crazy technology to cover their first event, the 2015 US Open.

The year of the Tiger is turning into the year of the back. Not a fan, but would never wish anyone injury and ill health. Recover soon Tiger, but dont rush it and make it worse ...... see you around September?

@Reedster if Notah wants to be loyal to a childhood friend, so be it. The objectionable types are like you who use the name "tigger"...not because you are a fan of Winnie-the-Pooh, its nothing more than a another cowardly, veiled slur.

@rrusrjr2  Are you crazy?  Unlike haters like you, Tiger is very popular among his peers.

@MorphySmith @shermanb52.sb It's just that I am smart enough to know when you use the name "tigger" It's not because you are a fan of Winnie-the-Pooh, its nothing more than a another cowardly, veiled slur.
