Tiger Woods chipping after back surgery, expects to return to PGA Tour in summer

Tiger Woods is healthy enough to practice chipping and putting, and he expects to return to the PGA Tour this summer, according to ESPN.com.

Woods has been sidelined since having surgery to repair a pinched nerve in his back on March 31 and missed the Masters for the first time in 20 years. However, Woods’ recovery is on schedule and he could be back before the end of the 2014 major season, according to his agent Mark Steinberg.

“He’s doing a little bit more and more each day,” Steinberg told ESPN.com. “He’s getting to the point of light chipping and putting and the doctors and trainers seem to be pleased with where he is. He is on schedule but we don’t know what that schedule means. I don’t know when he intends to be playing competitively.

“But I expect it to be this summer. I know that’s a wide range, but as the weeks go by we’ll be able to pinpoint an approximate time. It’s still a little early for that. Nothing that has gone on from the day of the surgery until today gives me any pause to amend what I said then. I know that’s broad and vague but we can’t pinpoint a specific time until we’re further along.”

The next major championship is the U.S. Open, which begins June 12 at Pinehurst in North Carolina. The British Open starts July 17 at Royal Liverpool, and the PGA Championship kicks off at Kentucky’s Valhalla on Aug. 7. Prior to his back injury, the 2014 major season was seen as favorable for Woods, who has won majors at Royal Liverpool and Valhalla and finished runner-up at the 2005 U.S. Open at Pinehurst.

Another key summer event for Woods is the Quicken Loans National at Congressional on June 26, which raises money for the Tiger Woods Foundation.

Woods’ close friend Notah Begay said last week that Woods would not be able to compete in the U.S. Open, and PGA Tour commissioner Tim Finchem said he did not expect Woods to return until July.

Steinberg’s comments are welcome news to a golf industry that saw TV ratings drop significantly for the Tiger-less 2014 Masters and would face staggering losses in the event of a long-term Woods’ absence. (Woods hasn’t played in a PGA Tour event since shooting a final-round 78 at Doral on March 9.) This surgery — and his careful recovery — is aimed at extending his career, Steinberg said.

“I’ve seen a very responsible approach to getting back,” Steinberg said. “This is about the next 10 or 15 years, this is not about the next 10 weeks. This is not about targeting any specific tournament. If he needs to wait one or two or three extra weeks he will. He’s thinking about this very, very long term.”

I'm not a hater. I was actually a big fan. But those years of using PED's that made a linebacker out of a twig have wrecked his aging body. And the years of being worshipped as a golf god gave him a sense of entitlement. It's a shame that someone so athletically talented will not be remembered for his once brilliant golf game but for his poor moral character, cheating on and off the course, and his blustery arrogance.

So when someone yells " Tiger's back ! " this summer we won't know if they are talking about his game or his health.  I hope he heals perfectly so he can enjoy the rest of his life without pain.  But I will still be rooting for him NOT to break Jack's record.  The "greatest" golfer of all time in my opinion, should be a man of good character--and Tiger has shown the world he is not.

Warmer weather also expected back this summer.

Golfaholic and JBub have commented that what I said about the microdiskectomy is BS. Well, you are entitled to your opinions. All I am saying is at THIS STAGE, the disc material protroded at a weak point, often caused by a snapping injusry,, tearing the fibresof the annulus fibrosus ( the encircling fibrous ring of the disc. If the tear or weakness is minimal, the ring will heal by scar tissue which is never as strong as the original nature has made.So there should be some corset wearing to lessen the chances of a snapping injury.

Of course, Golfaholic has a point. When our tissues degenearte. there is a possibility of a repeat injury and leading to more of the Nucleus pulposus ( disc matter extruding..

When that happens, one needs a titanium  disc REPLACEMENT. These days, that is done by a minimally invasive operation called XLIF ( please google and see what i mean). I believe Retief Goosen had this operation. In the long run, who knows, Tiger may have to undergo this in the future years. Remember age cause degeneration. That is definite.

But I still hope Tiger will play the US Open..

Christians celebrated Easter this past Sunday, tiger's lover will celebrate in the summer.

It's just silly to keep mentioning Tiger's status vis a vie the majors.  He hasn't won a major in 6 years, he's older and more feeble, his recovery will be slow, and quite frankly it may take him a long time just to win again.  And YET - he will probably still be the betting favorite in the next major he plays in.  Tiger WAS the greatest of his generation, but he's on the slide into oblivion now.

Golf would not be where it is today without the presence of Tiger Woods.  Sorry for all the Tiger-haters, but can't argue with numbers.  For any guy (including myself) who has been involved in the golf industry for 20+ years, specifically know that when Tiger bursted on to the scene, that the "dollar-per-round" and "dollar-per-square-foot" almost tripled in value in 97.  Golf course development doubled, 10x bigger purses, record attendances at tournaments, higher TV ratings, more sponsors, etc.  I promise that it wouldn't be a 76 billion dollar industry today, if wasn't for Tiger.  When a country is in need of popularizing a sport, who do they call i.e. Europe and Asia?  Tiger Woods.  They don't call on any other golfer.  Let that sink in.  So for you uneducated hackers out there, stop biting the hand that brings money into your sport.  Just absolutely amazed by the high-level of morons that come on to this site and it's a shame.

Love him or hate him, Tiger is the straw that stirs the drink, to borrow a phrase from Reggie.

Bubba's a nice fellow, and yeah, he might be "cooler" than Tiger, according to SI, but he doesn't drive the ratings, and he never will.

Oh, and through it all, if I'm not mistaken, Tiger is still the #1 ranked golfer in the world.

To the haters: You sometimes get upset because you are not in control of an outcome. Other times you get upset because of the expectations and assumptions you make about a person. Those feelings are about you, not about the other person. If you are in Christ, you recognize that people are who they are, and do what they do.

When you have expectations or assumptions about people and leave them unresolved, you end up with resentments. Resentments make you bitter and dissatisfied and discontent. Resentments and pent up anger make you miserable and ages you.

No one currently, Jordan Speith, Rory, or Ricky will replicate the passion that was Tiger Woods. I feel that this will never happen again....ever! Tiger is/was a minority in a predominately old, white-guy sport who has a great persona of hard work and professionalism. Hell, most everyone became a fan of Tiger over the years...enjoying his unparallelled play and record-setting wins. What's not to love about this guy? So he had a "failing" that many men have had or thought of having...so what? He was and is the greatest of all time.

There is no one more undeserving and less interesting than Jim Nantz as a golf commentator. I have a hard time watching when he is in the announcer's seat.

Tiger is the cornerstone of golf's popularity and has been for many years. What happened between he and his wife is strictly his own business. Personally, it is totally feasible that his "trophy" wife was a bit too "trophy" and not enough "real woman" to satisfy his needs. He should not be chastised for having "strayed" from her for, in reality, she does not appear to be the type of woman a "real man" needs. I also don't think his current choice is any better. If he wants some advice he should consult me.

@BobbyphTan What I said was that Golfaholic had no reason to doubt that your post was legit, that every case is different, and that rehab times can vary. Thanks for the info on this type of surgery. I am glad to hear that Tiger is up and about. Hope he never has back pain again.

@thenext06  Anybody that's not a "Tiger Hater" is a "Tiger-victim-hater".  I'll give an example that's a hyperbole but only to make my point clear.  In 1945, if you were not a " Hi tler hater" then you were a "J ew hater".  Of the two, I'd rather be a Hi tler hater.

@thenext06  Compare that with he growth in revenue and salaries in other sports over the same 20 years. Suddenly it doesn't seem so remarkable.........

As much as I would like to see Tiger back, I hope he doesn't return before being completely healed. I hope the doctors are monitoring his healing carefully, and do not give him the ok to come back before time.

@muser  That may be enough to make me stop following golf.  I don''t know that I can stomach that nauseating discussion for the next year.

@alboka  Problem is Woods himself has made so much money available to pro golfers that there seems to be no desire to put in the kind of work required to play at Woods level.

Speith seems to be closest to having the passion but I see guys like Dustin Johnson who would rather be playboys than great golfers because you can be average and make a fortune.

@alboka  So you're insulting Tiger's ex-wife after a Tiger comeback article- - why? You don't even know her but you say "she appears to be" a type of woman…"  Since you know everything do you know you sound like a 14 year old?

@johhnywalkerblack @BobbyphTanYour "thank" needs to be capitalized. A comma is required after the word "you". Your "Dr. I Can't Spell..." needs quotation marks. Your submission is a phrase, so it doesn't need a period.

@RCH @alboka  I agree 100% RCH. There is so much money now that most golfers are quite content just to be on the tour, there is no need to win in order to make good money. They may be very talented but they have no passion for winning. It's one of the main reasons that the average fan stops watching when Tiger isn't playing.

As for all the Tiger lovers complaining about people not worshipping Tiger, it''s not because he had an affair (who other than his ex wife cares about that), it's because of his on-course behaviour that we don't like him. Tiger acts like a spoiled brat, too bad because he is a great golfer, unfortunately he's also a supreme jerk.

@HalCooper ....because no rich people were involved with golf before Tiger...are you serious? Tiger fans are KMart shoppers compared with long term golf fans.

@muser @BubbaJoBubba1  Really?  Tiger fans are EXACTLY who they are trying to reach.  Businessmen with disposable income, who appreciate excellence and drive.  Not like the people on this forum, we're all the hacks who aren't willing to look past the person and appreciate excellence, but people with money have had success, and know why it happens, and thus, appreciate Tiger.
