No Clubs? No Problem! Tacoma Course Makes Foray Into FootGolf

From Speed Golf to 15-inch holes, there have been a lot of creative attempts of late to make golf faster and easier to attract more people to the game. But what about trading in the golf ball for a soccer ball and getting rid of those frustrating clubs entirely?

Welcome to the world of FootGolf, a sport that combines soccer with golf. According to the Associated Press, Meadow Park Golf Course in Tacoma, Wash. is set to open the state’s first FootGolf course, with course director Chris Goodman leading the charge.

“We started running focus groups through it, and there were a lot of laughs and giggles — the kind you don’t always get here on a golf course,” Goodman said. “Golf is a lifelong learning game. You get your driver working, you start missing putts.

“Footgolf, you’re kicking a soccer ball from tee to green, where there’s a 21-inch hole you have to get the ball in. We had players from age 6 to 65 out there, and we’ll get an 85-year-old out there soon.”

Believe it or not, footgolf isn’t exactly new, and it’s rapidly spreading around the country and the world.

According to the Federation for International Footgolf newsletter, Washington will then become the 26th state — and Meadow Park will be the 76th footgolf course — in America.

Rules for the game were standardized in 2009 in the Netherlands. The first Footgolf World Cup was played two years ago in Hungary, and there are tournaments now played in Australia, Italy, Ireland and the U.S.

All told, 22 countries are members of the federation.

Whether FootGolf is the future of golf remains to be seen, but if you’re sick of breaking irons over your knee and throwing putters into ponds, maybe it’s the perfect game for you.

Looks like fun.  Probably just a matter of time before some drunk breaks his ankle in one of the holes and sues the course.

Oh wow I worked on the marketing team for the FootGolf course at River Ridge in Oxnard, Ca. last summer. The sport is tons of fun and extremely cheap compared to golf. It will never replace golf, but it is a great alternative for a great day. Glad to see it is finally getting some recognition.

It would probably be fun.  I can't see spending a lifetime trying to get good at it, but it could be a fun way to spend an afternoon.  I'm sure there's a big open field somewhere, far away from an actual golf course, where you could do this.

What I can't figure out is why it's being covered on a golf website.

It is not a new idea ppl. We used to play this on our down time between soccer games at tournaments when I was like 10. I am 30 now. Do the math

Mark King the CEO of Taylormade is behind this idea and pushing for it, they're not reaching their sales goals of clubs this year and in n attempt to get more people to come play Goofy Golf is the route he's taking to sell his HIGH COST EQUIPMENT. $800.00 Irons.$400.00 Drivers, $500. set of Fairway woods, $400.00 set of Hybrids and $48.00 a dozen balls. How does making a 15" hole get people on fixed incomes and families to feed and bills to pay shell out hundreds to play Golf.

NO, do not increase the size of the hole, if people can't putt in a regulation size too bad for them they cam go play

I wouldn't care except a local course sets time aside on the real course for the non-existent foot golfers. Frisbee golf doesn't take up golf courses and has a completely different vibe.

Looks like fun. Don't think its meant to be compared to golf so the traditionalists can get off their high horses. And for the record its called football because the players use their feet. Unlike american football where the only player that uses his foot is the skinny European kicker or punter.

Not sure which is more stupid: soccer golf or frisbee golf.

Nope. Too old now for football ..... and when I played football I played FOOTBALL, just as now I play GOLF !!! Translation: you people call it "soccer" which has nothing to do with socks, just as the game you call "football" is not played with the feet :p

You see what happens when you let a sneaker company buy a golf equipment company??

He is pushing this stuff and I don't get it.  The guy/gal who wants to putt to a 15" hole isn't the same guy/gal who is shelling out big money on equipment.  What he ought to consider is more reasonably priced offerings and not coming out with a new driver every 60 seconds.

Hey pompous guy - soccer as a name didn't originate in the U.S.  It was Brit. slang for Association Football as opposed to rugger for Rugby Football (where much of the advancing is by running and passing - not by 'foot.'
