Phil Mickelson Makes Emergency Visit to Putting Coach Dave Stockton After Four-Putt

What’s the first thing you do after a four-putt?

If you’re Phil Mickelson, you ring Dave Stockton and schedule an emergency session. Fresh off a final-round 76 at the Wells Fargo Championship in which he struck the ball sweetly but struggled on the greens, Mickelson said that his next stop would be a visit with the putting guru, Stockton.

“I’ll see [him] tomorrow and see if I can get this putter a little more consistent, because I had two great putting days and then I had just two horrific ones.”

That’s a fair assessment. After carding a 63 on Saturday to move within two strokes of the lead, Mickelson showed up Sunday with his flat stick in full rebellion. He three-putted No. 8, then missed shorties on the 11th and 14th holes before the coup de grace on the 16th, where he four-putted from 30 feet.

It’s been a strange year for Mickelson, who has yet to notch a top-10 finish and missed the cut at the Masters for the first time since 1997.

But the reigning British Open champ said he saw signs of progress.

“It was a really rough day on the greens, but, again, I had a good week. It was a fun week and, again, it was a step in the right direction.”

It doesn’t get any easier from here. On to the Players Championship this week, and the slick putting surfaces of TPC Sawgrass.

@si_golf Amazing how the game is that cruel when a guy can add 13 strokes from one day to the next.
