Players Championship Draws Lowest TV Ratings in 15 Years Without Tiger Woods

TV viewers largely tuned out Martin Kaymer’s win on Sunday at the Players (Darren Carroll/SI).

The longer he’s gone, the more his absence grows.

Without Tiger Woods in the field this weekend, the Players Championship drew a feeble 2.6 overnight rating on NBC Sunday, according to Sports Media Watch. That’s a 54 percent drop from last year, when Woods claimed the title, and the lowest Sunday showing for the event in 15 years.

Final round coverage of The Players Championship earned a 2.6 overnight rating on NBC Sunday afternoon, down 54% from Woods’ victory last year (5.7) and down 24% from 2012 (3.4). The 2.6 overnight tied as the lowest for Sunday coverage of the event since at least the past fifteen years, matching 2005 coverage that featured the second and third rounds.

Yes, the tournament had other factors working against it, including a 90-minute weather delay that likely turned a lot of viewers off. A tepid Sunday showing by 20-year-old American star Jordan Spieth surely had an impact, too.

But it’s hard to overlook what’s really going on. Even though there’s plenty of good reasons to watch (Martin Kaymer’s resurgence was an uplifting story), life just ain’t the same on a Woods-less Tour.

A large percentage of Tiger viewers aren’t golfers

Watched it rather watch when he is not playing.

golf was golf before Tiger, and will be golf after Tiger - those who got interested in the game and continued with it are the future - Tiger is yesterday's news and I'd rather watch a tournament without him because then the commentary is about everyone else playing, not how Tiger skinned his knee, broke a nail...

I watched the Players BECAUSE it was GOLF on TV.

if you watched 4 rounds of the players, you need a life. Go to the range...hit some balls... work on your game. Do something. Record the damn thing and watch the highlights.

I watch EVERY golf tournament. They still force you to watch all of his highlights from the past. Why don't you guys get it? Most people are sick of Tiger Woods. TV ratings are bogus.

It would have been great if Tiger and Phil had been playing, but life goes on and so does golf, the new boys are doing great, and we will keep watching

If tiger were to never come back and play, golf would revert back to the way it was before he started playing. Golf channel would not be what it is, golf ratings would go down, prize money and sponsors would all slowly diminish.

I watched it. But I love golf. I watched it before tiger and I'll continue to watch it after tiger. He is important to the game but he is not more important than the game. :-)

Yes. Golf will run around Tiger Woods. The other players are good. Yet Tiger is awesome. Why are the ratings low? Hmmm,

Tiger's golf and the PGA pros know it. This article proves it.

I was the PGA championship last year. Tiger Woods was the only golfer who did not smile, acknowledge the fans, look at the fans, sign autographs, or even acknowledge kids. I don't know why he has so many lovers out there, because he treats you like crap.

I watched the Players to see good golf. Whether Tiger was there or not made no difference.

It more interesting to watch the young guns take on Tiger because they don't choke like the old guys used to , half the time they gave it to him. .. But i watch golf with or without Tiger Woods

People don't realize that John Havens... The PGA and it's players benefited enormously when Tiger came on tour and dominated. People want to see an athlete do things that no other athlete is capable of doing ala Micheal Jordan. Once Tiger is done and no another single golfer takes the baton and create as much buzz just merely by his presence in a tournament the tour, the players and golf will certainly suffer financially Less viewerships equal less revenue which will equal less sponsorship and declining tv contracts and ultimately lower pursues on tour. The PGA tour players will be the most affected by a Tiger-less tour.

Rick Newton

All the Tiger haters can say what they want. The fact is that without him, tour purses would not be what they are today. Just like any athlete, they all decline with age but he has made the tour what it is today.

Guy Crawford

I enjoy watching Tiger chase history and occasionally still hit shots that make other PGA Tour players go wow. However if he's not in the field it doesn't impact my viewing habits at all.
