Charles Barkley’s Golf Swing Still Stinks But His Attitude Doesn’t

News

It’s back!

The most tragicomic swing in golf returned to the spotlight Wednesday, when Charles Barkley took part in the Champions Tour Regions Tradition Pro-Am at Shoal Creek in Birmingham, Alabama. The Round Mound of Rebound played with Fred Couples, but judging from this video, Boom Boom’s silky action did not wear off on him.

On the upside, Barkley seems to have found peace with agonizing action, which is more a spasm than a golf swing.

Take a look. Whether you laugh or cry, you’ll wind up feeling better about yourself.

Why play golf bro if you have to undergo this kind of suffering and humiliation.

He has a beautiful swing on the practice range. His problem is all mental. Maybe he should wear headphones, and blinders.

I had this exact issue and agree with the person below saying this is 100% mental. It's a performance thing, an overgrown yip. Finally after a couple of years of being laughed at, friends telling me to "ditch the hitch", and actually walking off the course a few times, I found a sports psychologist who worked with golfers. Learned some relaxation exercises, developed a pre-shot routine, focused soley on my target, and worked it out on the range (with an audience sometimes.) Then started taking it to the course. It was a process lasting a few months or so. I am over it...I didn't watch much of the Haney show. Turned it off after I heard him say that it was absolutely not mental or something along those lines.

Poor Chuckles. I feel bad for him. I wish he could fix his swing. The guy loves golf too much to have to deal with that swing the rest of his life

He should just stick to mini golf, but yet, he has galleries willing to stand nearby. Idiots...

His "swing" is more like a seizure...

It's TV people! !!!!!! Gees really, I fixed a ladles golf swing in an afternoon cause we got paired! OMG, and you believe a sports personality can't get a person to teach him to swing properly.

Needs some help with his weight shift.  He's starting his down swing with his arms rather than turning his hips to the left.

If Sir Charles would use my swing training device he would be a scratch golfer in a week.

Sorry to state the obvious, but his swing woes are 100% mental. After all, he's an elite athlete who's a member of the Basketball Hall of Fame and was voted one of the 50 greatest NBA players of all time. By definition, unless he's become visually impaired, his eye-hand coordination is superb. In and of itself that doesn't guarantee his playing scratch golf but getting the ball in the air and more forward than left or right is a given.

At the end of the video, he bends over, picks up his tee and places it in his pocket!

He always puts a smile on my face.  Thanks, Sir Charles.

I wouldn't call that a golf swing.  I'd call it a non-golf swing.

Regardless what one might think about Charles, I am glad to see that just because you are not good at something, doesn't mean you can't go out and still have fun.

It's crazy how he can take normal practice swings but as soon as he addresses the ball he can't get rid of that "hitch" in his swing.

Charles was always and still known to be pretty outspoken on personal issues. In my opinion I dont

think its cool, its obvious he doesn't care because he gets away with it, if he said something like

I think SOME of these people should be aware of health issues that come along with obesity that's something

different but to come straight out with saying the people are too fat is not cool. AND YES, I recall watching him during his NBA days in Phoenix and he was rather CHUNKY for his position, maybe that's why he never won a championship RING.

gm5425

Maybe if Charles wasn't so fat, he would have a better golf swing.  Since Charles has such a dislike for fat people...he must really hate himself.

How about the nba tossing Chucky old boy for his comments dissing the whole entire women populace of San Antonio, and might I add that comment was deemed racist since the large portion of women in San Antonio are of Mexican origin. here we have golf .com highlighting this PIG and that is what he is a PIG.

I have always maintained that the Chuckster's golf swing is 99% a product of fear of failure. That long pause at the top of his backswing is a "What if I hit a bad shot" moment. All the mechanical stuff that has been drummed at him by the likes of Hank Haney misses the real point in MHO.

The funniest part is watching Fred Couples.  If you look closely, you'll see Freddy's head move slightly in anticipation of watching the ball, only to have to stop his head when Barkley does his signature "pause" on the downswing.  Hilarious.

He does it on purpose so we'll think, "Oh that Charles." The guy is nothing but a tool, yet the masses continue to think his low-brow brand of humor is somehow entertaining and worthy of much undeserved attention. Barkley's been on scholarship his whole life.

i just don't understand why it's so bad...it must be psychological? His practice swings look (somewhat) normal?

JoeGunter

@si_golf Disagree. People this bad should be on the range, NOT the course.

Also saw a pro who ran a golf school while I was on vacation who was also very helpful. So sports psychologist and a good pro, Chuck.

@oscar1930  Yes, but do those rocks earn as much as Sir Charles? Are you jealous Pee Wee?

@KathiMcdermott I think you need to relax a bit and look honestly about what has been said or done...not everything deemed by the media or folks like yourself is sexism or racism...just honest comment or observation. Women and minorities are not immune to criticism or comment.

gm5425
gm5425

@D14 @KathiMcdermott  Kathi must be a fat hating person like Charles.  It's OK to make negative comments about fat women....just not skinny women.  You know... skinny women are acceptable and fat women are, well, just lazy slobs.
