Tiger Woods Visits His New Course in Mexico, Thrilled With Progress

News, Photos, Tiger

The Tour stopped in Texas, but Tiger hopped the border.

As his fellow Tour pros tee it up at the HP Byron Nelson Championship at TPC Four Seasons this week, Woods took a trip Mexico to check on the progress at his new golf course, the par-71, 7,401-yard El Cardonal, located in the Diamante development on the Baja peninsula.

“Thrilled with how things are turning out at El Cardonal @DiamanteCabo,” said Woods, who has not played a competitive round since his March 31 surgery to correct a pinched nerve in his back.

The course — scheduled to open this fall — is Woods’ architectural debut, and it’s shaping up to be tough but fun, much like the course hosting this year’s U.S. Open that some observers expect Tiger to miss as he prepares for a “summer return.”

“I don’t want people to lose a dozen balls when they play our course,” Woods told Golf Magazine’s Joe Passov. “Pinehurst is a great example of a course that’s tough for us but playable for everybody else. It gets players thinking, with options around the greens. We want lots of variety.”

Tiger's made special effort to set up the course so that if he accidentally moves his ball in the trees, there is no way any camera is going to have the right angle to catch it.

Good for him. He does more than just play golf. Can't say that for the other players, can you?

14 Majors - 79 wins of the PGA - something tells me that you've earned the right to build as many golf courses as you please.

Awesome picture - GO TIGER!

This is Tiger's debut to being a former tour player.

David Duval, former #1 who disappeared off the face of the earth forever just posted 66 and is one back of the leader.  That's better news than this non-paid advertisement for Tiger's new golf course.

The venue looks great!

I anticipate more comments following the above article than tonight's summary of the Byron Nelson Classic.

The field at Irving, Texas appears at first glance to be the weakest in the history of the event.  I don't expect a strong field at the Colonial next week.  Nelson and Hogan were icons in professional golf.  Wonder what will happen to the Bay Hill Invitational and Memorial when the respective hosts are ............

The Bob Hope Classic and Bing Crosby Clambake are suffering as well because of both format and weak fields.  The format for both events is far outdated and causes six hour rounds with clowns like Bill Murray.

He's is well, he'd rather relax and play Golf in Mexico like Retired people do. He's got enough money and his youth to do it.

Looks like Royal Aberdeen to me. Well, OK, except the shallow bunker, Tiger's shorts, and...er...the sunshine!

Se si sgonfiasse un po' e lasciasse perdere il suo fitness esasperato forse potrebbe riprendere con successo la caccia ai Major che gli mancano per diventare il più grande in assoluto di tutti i tempi!

@Happygolfer  The athletic skills he has over Brandle Chamblee for example, makes him no more qualified to design a course.  I suppose a PGA pro has an advantage over somebody like Pete Dye because he has lots of experience playing the holes in competition.

Please don't go telling Tiger his fame (14 Majors - 79 wins) has "earned the right" to do anything.  That attitude lost him his marriage.

@The Computer Store Owner That was Thursday, Duval shot 76 Friday and missed the cut.  Here's the bottom line.  I counted 6 posts from you on this thread.  I just checked the story about Friday's action at the Byron Nelson.  One comment, and it wasn't from you.  Do you want to talk about advertising?  Tiger is the best advertising, and you are the consumer.

@The Computer Store Owner

Do you respect Tiger's record as an amateur, six consecutive U.S.G.A. amateur titles, and as a professional, 14 majors and 79 career wins?

@MartinWonderfull   Of course the face of golf over the last decade is a role model.  I agree.  But is Tiger is a good role model?  I'm from the camp that can't comprehend how anyone could possibly think Tiger is a good role model.

If Tiger hits 17 or 18 majors I'd call him the GOAT.  14 isn't quite enough, IMO.

Matt Molina,

Could be the GOAT in the future, currently, Jack Nicklaus is greatest and the score is 18-14!

@The Computer Store Owner @Happygolfer  There is no golf without Tiger, as the ratings show. Tiger is the KING. He was not good to his ex-wife, but I like him for his golf, not his marriage. I've listened to The Doors more than once before, and its not because i like Morrison.

The Computer Store Owner

@macer  But if Tiger stays at 14 just watch--all the of the TIger nation will try to reinvent the yardstick for measuring greatness between the generations.  Of course it will be something that fits Tiger's resume.  That will not be second place finishes in majors.

stephen.goldschmidt

@JamesB @The Computer Store Owner@macer James - you know as well as I do that for many the goalpost is actually a personal deal. If Tiger finished with 30 majors it would be an endless barrage of steroid accusations, cries of cheating, the fields are weaker, blah blah blah. And if that didn't work then it would just be "I like Jack better. He was nicer, whiter, and didn't get a divorce".
