Report: Rory McIlroy Broke Up With Caroline Wozniacki Over the Phone
Breaking up is hard to do — unless you do it in a three-minute phone conversation.
That’s apparently how Rory McIlroy ended his engagement and nearly three-year relationship with tennis star and fiancé Caroline Wozniacki last week, according to a report by The Times tennis writer Neil Harman.
Rory took the breakup in stride and won the European Tour’s BMW Championship on Sunday, rallying from seven strokes back to capture his first victory of the year.
Caroline — who reportedly thought McIlroy’s phone breakup was a joke — didn’t fare as well. She lost her match to Yanina Wickmayer, 7-6 (5), 4-6, 6-2, in the first round of the French Open. After the match she spoke to the media for the first time since the breakup in what SI’s Jon Wertheim reported was a “thoroughly civil and considerate back-and-forth.”
“Obviously, you’re not prepared for something like this and it came a bit as a shock,” Wozniacki said. “I just tried to prepare the best that I could, and really tried to focus on my match and on what I had to do out there.”
Wozniacki, Wertheim writes, spoke with “no tears, no quivering voice — just an abundance of likability.”
Hey, at least Rory didn’t do it via text.
