Cheyenne Woods Qualifies for U.S. Women’s Open at Pinehurst

There will be a Woods at Pinehurst, just not the one golf fans might be used to seeing.

Tiger Woods withdrew from the 2014 U.S. Open on Wednesday, but his niece, Cheyenne, qualified for the U.S. Women’s Open after posting 73-68 at a sectional qualifier in Scottsdale, Arizona.

Displaying a closing ability reminiscent of her of Uncle Tiger, Woods fired a back-nine 32 at the Country Club at DC Ranch to move into a tie for second, enough to qualify for her second U.S. Women’s Open. Woods missed the cut in the 2012 event.

Woods has failed to make the cut in each of her three major appearances, but she grabbed her first professional win in February at the Australian Ladies Masters.

The U.S. Women’s Open will be held June 19-22.

Golf.com already has too many stories about golfers with the last name Woods. We don't need any more!

I can't imagine what the ratings boost would be if she were to contend on the weekend.  I hope we find out.

@MorphySmith  Too bad, man ! When you're good, your name appears in print, regardless of what it is. If you're a "Woods" hater, you need to quit watching or reading about golf, because that name will be around for a LOOOONNNNG time!  Get used to t!!

@D14  Here we go! Using the old worn out race card. She WON THE Australian women's open, DID HER COLOR HAVE ANYTHING TO DO WITH THAT, OR WAS IT HER golf GAME? TOU NEED TO GET OFF THAT OLD MERRY-GO-ROUN, AND STFU!!

@D14 You're the same guy I had to school last month about the Ladies European Tour of Merit.  That's the tour where Miss Woods is currently in the Top 10 (6th) after just 3 events.  Interesting that you somehow forgot that (or maybe not).

@alex987 @D14 If Phil Mickelson had a niece that qualified for the US Open, they would have reported that too. Get a life people.

@MorphySmith Yeah, I realize that ratings for the LPGA Tour aren't very high.  However, we are talking about their U.S. Open and it'll be played for the first time at the same venue used by the PGA the previous week (Pinehurst).  The PGA tournament competing for viewers that same weekend will be the Traveler's, not exactly the most watched among the mens' competitions.  So add together these facts, along with the name recognition of Woods being broadcast on all the news programs if she contends, and yes there would probably be a boost in that tournament's ratings.
