John Daly Admits to Gambling Away Over $55 Million

By his own admission, John Daly gambled away over $55 million.

In a interview with Yahoo! Sports’ Graham Bensinger, Daly acknowledged his gambling addiction, claiming to have played slots for two straight days, maintained seven $15,000 blackjack hands at once and risked $5,000 per spin at the slot machines.

Why did he do it? According to Daly, it’s simple: “stupidity.”

“We went through all my tax records to find out, because I really didn’t know, and it just came to that. I was shocked. I thought it might have been $20-25 (million), but I had no idea that it was $55-57 million. It’s crazy … I love the action. I love the adrenaline, going in there. Now if I gamble, I play the $25 slots. If I hit something, I might move up to $100. But I don’t do what I used to do anymore.”

For his part, Daly, 48, doesn’t seem too upset about losing so much money.

“People are going to say that I should regret it, but I did it. You know, I move on from it. I had a lot of fun doing it.”

People think that when they here about celebrities losing millions of dollars that it must be exaggerated.I do not believe it is. Gambling has taken over many celebrities lives. The state's have made it much too easy for people to get to casinos. In the old days we had 2 options-Vegas or Atlantic City. Today we are hard pressed to find a state without gambling. Gamblers may visit casinos many times per week and if you bet big, you will most likely lose big. For a guy that bets $1000 or $2000 a hand(and they are out there) he can easily lose $50,000 in one night. If he is wealthy and has good credit the casino will give him casino credit for insane amounts. Over years of gambling a person can lose in the millions if he has access to large amounts of cash.

So one casino bars Dana White from betting more than 5g's per hand in a casino because they do not want to lose money all while they let this drunken idiot Daly drop $55 mill in their laps?

What an interesting definition of "fun."

Geez...I never knew he has made that much to lose that much.  The one rule to gambling is--the house will always win in the long-run.  So, stick around long enough, lose all your money.  Go up 100%, take your money and run.  No one is ever going to get rich at gambling so if you hit the black jack table with say $400 and you're up $700 (on top of the $400), you walk. I don't gamble much but over the years that is how I have won like 80% of the time.

But his biggest regret is the $8 he blew on that sport coat.

That's so sad. John is such a good golfer and to toss his life away doing this is tragic.

Just get help for goodness sake.

Allowing people like that to write off gambling losses for tax purposes is just crazy.

I would imagine he grew up not having much and worked hard at his golf, became a somebody only to fall back to a nobody, like most boxers and baseball stars that had nothing.

To be given such a beautiful gift and screwing up your life 6 ways to Sunday.  What a waste.

Not only could Big John hit the ball a long way, he had great touch on and around the greens.  But only when he wasn't busy getting in his own way.  If there was a statistic for most talent squandered in golf he'd probably be the leader.  Looks like he's also good at squandering money.

An alcohpolic too. Multiple addictions are never stopped without prolonged treatment and an intense program. It goes on for years. But you come out sober and, in this case, a few more dollars.  I must admit that lots of my friends did this but a few shed their bonds. At one time this guy was a serious contender......nothing works unless he wants it too and the money's gone. Sad to see.

Don't listen to the haters John, I personally always liked your "good 'ol boy" attitude. Did you kill anyone? NO- So what if you chose to piss away a fortune. It's your money. I've read many stories of your charitable gifts. I sincerely hope you get that golf game back in order and tear up the senior tour in a few because you suck at gambling. :)

A lot of talent, he's starting to look a lot like Pete Rose, another talented athlete with a gambling problem. I wish him well, hope he figures it all out before it's to late.

richh0501
richh0501

@Charlie P well you can only write off up to your winnings, example you gamble 55 million from that amount you win 10 million. you can write off the loses up to 10 million.......of course the other 45 million you cannot

@raunchex I'm of Irish/Celtic decent. I'm not a drunk and I know plenty of other Irish who are not drunks as well. So, I take particular offense to your broad brush bigotry. But, yes. Daley has at least two addictions. And HE is responsible for dealing with them!

John Daly is not stupid. He is world class golfer , entertainer, with world class issues. He needs sincere friend to help guide him.

@c23634697 If you are defining class as the opposite of the word class, then I agree with you.
