‘Buy, Buy, Birdie!’ Phil Mickelson Makes New York Post Cover Over Report of Insider-Trading Probe

News

The headline writers of the New York Post do their most inspired work when a professional golfer gets in trouble.

During the Tiger Woods’ scandals in late 2009, the Post put Woods on the cover a record 20-straight times, including the legendary cover line: “Tiger Admits: I’m A Cheetah”. That’s more consecutive front pages than the Post gave to the Sept. 11 attacks.

So when the Wall Street Journal reported on Friday that the FBI and SEC were investigating stock trades of Phil Mickelson, the chances of Mickelson appearing on Page 1 of the Post on Saturday were a surer thing than a stock tip from Warren Buffett. Here it is:

I never did like Phil Mickelson.I thought he was flaky and that his mannerisms of niceness on the course are all made up. But let us not be hasty in coming to judgement. Let the authorities do their work, and if he has done wrong, penalise him.

The People's Choice, Mr. Smiles, and Mr. Nice Guy!  Athletes of color are severely criticized for the company kept, however, Phil seems to get a pass from the media for knowingly playing golf  and being friends with the gambling icon from Las Vegas.

I am anxious to hear comments from three Golf Channel staff members who worship Phil: Brandel Chamblee, Rich Lerner, and John Feinstein.

Phil has long been associated with big time gambling and gamblers, with nary a negative comment. Totally opposite of the reaction to Michael Jordan's gambling escapades.  Phony Phil, now being connected to a insider trading investigation?

@tommyrogo, no, I don't love the New York Post. They are just another scandalous publication in the same genre as the "National Enquirer."
