Tiger Woods Is ‘Automatic’ Ryder Cup Captain’s Pick If Healthy, says Tom Watson

Tom Watson confirms in his interview with Golf Magazine’s Jeff Ritter that a healthy Tiger Woods will indeed be a member of the U.S. Ryder Cup team this September at Gleneagles in Scotland. Watson was asked if Tiger would be added to the team if he doesn’t make it on points. Here is Captain Tom’s response:

I’ve said it before that he’s an automatic pick. You can’t have a player of that caliber not on the team. But that has to be weighed next to what his health is. I hope he can get back in the swing, because he wasn’t playing his best even before the surgery. But if he’s not physically right, Tiger will be the first one to tell me.

Watson says Phil Mickelson, who has yet to record a top-10 finish this year, would also likely be a captain’s pick.

Those are not the only choice nuggets from Watson in the interview. He address his sometimes-chilly relationship with Tiger and revisits the final hole from his near-miss in the 2009 Open Championship at Turnberry. He also reveals what Jack Nicklaus told him in a phone call after the tournament.

Filthy Phil might be too busy trading on the latest inside tips he got from his friend. Now, if somehow he could get a tax break for playing the Ryder, I'm sure he would reconsider.

If you are looking for a team of foul-mouthed low morals scumbags, Tiger is your #1 man!

Ridiculous comment by Watson. How is Watson to know if Tiger doesn't play competitive golf? Take his word for it? Ha ha. That would be the day.

Not like he tells much.

Tiger's problem isn't his back. It's his HEAD.

Who cares about golf much less the Ryder Cup at least at this time of the year? I'm more interested in whether Tige is juicing again and if he'd hooked up with any porn babes lately.

Well naturally a "healthy" Tiger would be an automatic bid as in other years. But Tom Watson is no fool either. His description of healthy is entirely different then others. Plus the other caveat is "but if he's not physically right, Tiger will be the first to tell me". The history of Tiger Woods revealing anything about his physical well being has been well established over the years. It will be interesting to see what Watson will do if Tiger's play is somewhat suspect.

Sure, Puddy Tat's an automatic pick.

With Puddy Tat on the team, the quality and number of waitresses, barmaids, hostesses, escorts, and corporate swag increases markedly.

The golf? Not really.

We know what Jack told him in the phone call after his playoff.  A healthy Tiger would be awesome.  He needs to play an event before the PGA Championship.  Phil better get his act together as most of his Ryder Cup points are from last year's majors.

It was smart for Watson to come out and say it now.  Name all the golfers who've won 5 PGA events in the last two seasons.  If he's healthy, and ready to play, of course he's a captain's pick.

they are both old fats now!!! tiger is D_O_N_E as ped effects have finally taken hold of his body. let's see how phil does the rest of the year

What does "healthy" mean?  What if his game is not healthy.  What if Tiger doesn't have a top 25 finish the rest of his miserable year?  What if Tiger is not even in the top 50 in Ryder Cup points?  What if picking Tiger for the Ryder Cup means another guy with a Major win and more Ryder Cup points has to stay home?  (Kind of like the Keegan Bradly situation).

All this Tiger favoritism is actually hurting Tiger's popularity.  Although I suppose Tiger has the option of taking the high road and telling Tom,  "I'm not the most deserving this year to get a captain's pick--I'm going to not accept the pick so the most deserving guy can plan."    But the Tiger I have come to know and disrespect would never say that.  So Tom you have to save his declining reputation and just pick the guy most likely to score points for our team.

Both have played poorly overall in previous Ryder Cups. Pretty soon they will be old fart$. Why get excited now?

Tiger Woods is the "needle" in golf, the golfer most recognized around the world and the one who increases patron attendance, media coverage, and television ratings for every event he enters.  It matters not if the United States wins or loses the Ryder Cup because the overhyped event is about making money for sponsors, one of which is the PGA of America.

Tom Watson was given an offer he could not refuse by television, select Tiger as a captain's pick!

Phil Mickelson is not close to being the "needle" that is Tiger.  Phil should not be selected for the Ryder Cup unless he earns a spot.  A player, dozens according to keeroc15, deserve it more.

Wait, sorry, Phil should be on the Ryder Cup team because he could make sure uniforms are clean by supplying Clorox..........

keeroc15
keeroc15

ridiculous - dozens deserve it more.  Tiger has never played that well in the Ryder Cup anyway. There is no team in Tiger.

"...but if he's not physically right, Tiger will be the first to tell me"

Just like Puddy Tat was the first to tell his ex- about his stable of waitresses, barmaids, hostesses, and escorts.

Puddy Tat's got a resume of being legit.

@OK I've got a long list of Tiger hating credentials and nothing would make me happier than Tiger never coming even close to Jack's record, but even I'm tired of this crap about his personal life.  Move on, already.  There's lots to debate without dredging this up time after time.

@The Computer Store Owner  What if Tiger comes back and wins three in a row; what if Tiger shuts down all that come against him in Ryder Cup play; what if you give the hate a break for a while?

ianforbes

@The Computer Store Owner Funny. Why don't you also mention other non-deserving golfers? Top of that list is Phil. He's done zilch for a long time. Can't even stick around on weekends these days. So, obviously Phil should skip over to Tom and let him know to give his spot to someone else more deserving, correct? I know you must think that for sure.

Your idiotic reasoning of saying the guy who has a tonne of majors, was voted the player of the year LAST YEAR doesn't have the cred to be on the team if healthy. LOL. That's like saying Peyton Manning didn't deserve to start for a football team the year after he returned from neck surgery. Denver should have given the starting job to the backup, right? LOL

@The Computer Store Owner Ask yourself if anyone has refused a pick. It puts TW in an untenable position. Vilified for playing if people deem him not healthy and taking a spot away. Vilified for not playing because he refused to play for his country.

Sets up perfect for you doesn't it?

@macer Agreed on the Ryder Cup being an overhyped media event. I haven't watched it for years.

Tiger and Phil (if healthy) being captain's picks is about the closest thing to a mortal lock the world of golf will see in 2014.

@macer The Ryder is its own needle. I don't remember any stories after 2008 bemoaning low ratings because Tiger wasn't on the team. I get that that happens in regular majors, but this is a different entity. Besides, the broadcast will occur well out of primetime and while half the country is still asleep.

sq,

True. Corporate America and its Wall Street financiers would be furious if Puddy Tat wasn't handed a spot on the team. After all, they've got investments to protect, products to endorse, and the "brand" to market.

@superquad168 @The Computer Store Owner seperquad, you don't know how I think so I will tell you.  If Tiger is picked and he does not take the spot because he knows he is not the most qualified person, my respect for him will go up.  I will be far from worshiping him but I will give him credit for that.  I guarantee you I will put that in a post.

Patron,

Sunday television ratings for the 2012 Ryder Cup was up 71% compared with 2010 Ryder Cup (Wales) coverage and up 21% over the 2008 Ryder Cup telecast for the same day, Sunday.  Thank you for the feedback!

@OK @RobN I do acknowledge it, and frankly I hope you're right; I'm simply tired of hearing about it in every single article that mentions Tiger's name.  It's boring and repetitive, and I think that the constant harping on it gives him a pass on a lot of other golf related problems that deserve comment.

@renee

renee,

The United States of America is Tiger's country of birth, citizenship, and occupation.  Tiger has earned the right to represent his country on nearly all Ryder Cup and President's Cup teams.  If Tiger embarrasses you, it is your problem.

If sleazy means transgressions, does Arnold Palmer embarrass you?  Fred Couples?  Sir Walter Hagen?  Jim Nance?  John Daly?  Ryder Cup Captain, Tom Watson?

JoeCabot

@renee If a golfer embarrasses you, that is on you and no one else.

I'd have more respect for you if you just came out of your closet and told everyone the truth about why you have such contempt for Tiger.   You (and Donald S.) prefer to delude yourself into thinking you "love everyone".   The problem is, nobody, here, is buying it...

@macer @Patron Seriously? Yowza. That's disappointing. They didn't make the big hoopla about it that they have with the Tiger-less majors so far this year. Ratings or not, Tiger's record in the Ryder is lousy and I sure hope the network's wishes don't push out a more qualified golfer.

OK

Jim Nance is a walking embarrassment to humanity itself.

HeyJoe

@Patron @macer You're going to see a TON of talk about Tiger and ratings for the next 5 years or so as professional golf continues to confront the ever approaching reality of professional golf with no Tiger.

And ratings will go down, and golf will survive, as it always has.
