Rickie Fowler Wears Knickers to Honor Payne Stewart
Golf fashion plate Rickie Fowler engineered a fitting tribute the late U.S. Open champion Payne Stewart: sporting a pair of knickers and argyle socks in his opening round at Pinehurst No. 2, site of Stewart’s legendary 1999 U.S. Open victory.

A statue of Stewart who, like Fowler, was famous for his colorful attire, stands just behind the 18th green at Pinehurst No. 2, immortalizing his iconic fist pump after sinking the winning putt at the 1999 U.S. Open. Stewart died in an airplane accident just a few months later, when Fowler was just 10 years old.
Payne was one of my all time favorites…it’s going to be fun remembering what he did around this place! #USOpen
