Phil Mickelson Loses $20 in Wager with Fan at The Barclays
For a spectator looking for added entertainment, Phil Mickelson has always been a sure bet.
It’s a reputation Lefty burnished further this weekend at The Barclays, when he lost a $20 wager to a fan.
On his way to missing the third-round secondary cut, Mickelson left his tee shot on the par-four 18th in the rough.
Not much left to play for?
Never afraid to gamble, Mickelson ramped up the interest by turning a challenge from a fan in his gallery into a bet that he’d make birdie.
“Just $20,” Mickelson said after his round. “I gave him 4-to-1 odds. I would have made $5 if I made birdie. A par was a push. Bogey, I lost. Birdie, I would have won.”
After missing the green with his approach, which put birdie pretty much out of the equation, Mickelson made good on his losses. He turned and paid the spectator on the spot.
